Chapter 4 — A Son Keeps His Promise

Three months later, sunlight poured through the windows of Teresa's home.
The basil and bougainvillea in the backyard were blooming again.
Slowly, Teresa regained her strength.
Her laughter returned before her appetite did.
Samuel sold what remained of the struggling printing business and accepted a partnership with an old friend, determined to rebuild his life honestly.
He filed for divorce the same week Valeria was formally charged with attempted murder, fraud, and elder abuse.
She was later convicted and sentenced to years in prison.
On the day everything became official, Samuel visited the hospital chapel alone.
He carried only one thing.
The blue notebook.
He placed it gently in his mother's hands.
"You saved yourself," he whispered.
"No," Teresa replied, smiling through quiet tears.
"I saved it because I believed one day... my son would finally see the truth."
Samuel embraced her carefully.
For years, he had thought protecting his marriage meant ignoring the warning signs.
Now he understood something far more important.
Love never asks you to close your eyes to cruelty.
Sometimes the bravest thing a son can do...
is believe the frightened voice that has spent a lifetime protecting him.
Outside, Teresa slipped her arm through Samuel's as they walked home together beneath the warm afternoon sun.
