Chapter 15 - The Son of the Witness

Daniel admitted everything.

He and Margaret had an affair before she married Robert.

When Jason was born, Margaret told Daniel the baby had died.

Then she passed Jason off as Robert’s son.

Years later, Daniel learned the truth.

Margaret threatened him into silence.

My father discovered the secret during the audit.

That was the other information written in his files.

Not only stolen money.

A hidden child.

A false heir.

A family built on fraud.

Jason had grown up believing he would inherit everything.

If his parentage became public, his legal claim to several family trusts could collapse.

“If Emily found the files,” Daniel said, “she could expose all of it.”

“So Jason married me to get close to them,” I whispered.

Daniel looked devastated.

“I don’t know when he learned.”

Robert did.

“He knew before the wedding.”

My stomach turned.

“How?”

“Margaret told him.”

“Why would she tell him?”

“To make sure he controlled you.”

Every memory changed shape.

Jason’s sudden interest in me.

His insistence on a quick engagement.

His questions about my father’s papers.

His offer to organize the attic.

He had not married me despite my family.

He married me because of it.

The police continued searching the abandoned shopping center.

Jason spoke through the speakers again.

This time, his voice sounded unstable.

“You know now.”

“Yes,” I said into the radio.

“You used me.”

“I loved you.”

“No.”

“I did.”

“You poisoned me.”

“I needed time.”

“You stole my medication.”

“You were going to destroy everything.”

“You married me to find my father’s files.”

Silence.

Then he whispered.

“At first.”

The words hurt more than I expected.

“At first?”

“I did not expect to care.”

“You do not hurt someone like this if you care.”

“You were going to leave me.”

“I was trying to survive you.”

A sudden crash echoed through the building.

An officer shouted over the radio.

“Movement, east corridor.”

Then Sophie screamed.

I heard it through the speakers.

“Emily!”

Police moved.

Gunshots were not heard.

Only running.

Metal doors slamming.

Jason’s voice returned.

“If they come closer, she dies.”

Laura raised her hand.

Officers stopped.

“What do you want?” she asked.

“The ledger.”

“We have copies.”

“The original.”

“Why?”

“Because paper burns.”

“And murder charges don’t.”

“I did not kill Aaron.”

“Robert says you did.”

“My father is a coward.”

“Which father?”

Jason went silent.

Laura had found the wound.

Daniel’s name broke through his control.

“You want to talk about fathers?” Jason asked.

“Let Sophie go.”

“Bring Daniel.”

“No.”

“He started all of this.”

“He was threatened by Margaret.”

“He abandoned me.”

“Margaret lied to him.”

“He should have known.”

I took the radio.

“Sophie should not pay for what your parents did.”

Jason laughed.

“She always pays.”

A camera feed appeared on the command monitor.

Sophie sat tied to a chair inside an old department store.

Blood marked her forehead.

Jason stood behind her.

He held my father’s letter.

Not the copy.

The original.

Sophie had brought it after all.

She looked into the camera.

“I’m sorry.”

Jason leaned closer to her.

“You say that too much.”

Then every screen in the command vehicle went black.

The building alarms activated.

May you like

Smoke poured from the east entrance.

Jason had started a fire.
