He kissed my forehead... handed me a cup of tea... then secretly came back to steal every pill that could keep me alive.

The morning my husband tried to leave me to die, he made me tea.

That was the part no one ever believed.

People expect monsters to scream.

They expect slammed doors, threats, and rage.

Jason did none of that.

He placed a warm porcelain cup on my bedside table.

He tucked the blanket around my legs.

Then he smiled like the perfect husband.

"You'll be fine for a few weeks," he said.

His suitcase waited by the bedroom door.

Freshly pressed linen shirts.

Polished leather shoes.

His passport.

His sunglasses.

Everything ready for a seventy-four-day European vacation.

Downstairs, I could hear his parents laughing.

His younger sister was already waiting in the car.

Everyone was excited.

Everyone...

Except me.

For nearly three months, my immune system had been attacking my own body.

Some mornings I couldn't hold a glass without my hands shaking.

Some days I couldn't even make it down the stairs.

My specialist had warned us again and again.

Miss even one dose of my medication...

...and my condition could spiral into a medical emergency.

Jason heard every word.

He had been sitting beside me in the doctor's office.

"You can't leave me alone," I whispered.

He zipped his suitcase without looking at me.

"Emily, it's just a vacation."

"I can barely stand."

"You were standing yesterday."

"I collapsed yesterday."

He let out a tired sigh.

"My family planned this trip years ago."

"My dad finally retired."

"My mom has dreamed about Europe forever."

"And then I got sick."

His expression hardened.

"Yes, Emily."

"You got sick."

"We all know."

Those words hurt more than shouting ever could.

"I need you."

"No."

"You want me to ruin this trip for everyone."

He leaned down...

Kissed my forehead...

And walked away.

"I'll call you from the airport."

The suitcase wheels bounced down each step.

Minutes later, my mother-in-law appeared in the doorway.

Perfect hair.

Perfect makeup.

Perfect smile.

"You should get some rest," Margaret said.

"I need someone to stay with me."

Her smile disappeared.

"Jason deserves this vacation."

"I need my medicine."

"It's right beside your bed."

Then she looked straight at me.

"You've always been very talented at making yourself look helpless."

She turned and walked away.

Jason's sister lingered for a moment.

"Do you need anything?"

"Yes."

"Tell Jason to stay."

She looked down at the floor.

"I meant... food."

"Call my doctor."

"Tell her I'm alone."

Jason shouted from downstairs.

She quietly whispered...

"I'm sorry."

Then she left too.

At exactly 9:17...

The front door closed.

The car pulled away.

I kept telling myself Jason would come back.

He would realize how dangerous this was.

He would turn around.

At 9:45...

I reached for my medication.

Every compartment inside the pill organizer...

Was empty.

Not one pill.

My heart stopped.

I checked the prescription bottles.

Gone.

The emergency supply in the bathroom.

Gone.

I called Jason.

No signal.

I tried again.

Nothing.

The Wi-Fi had disappeared too.

My legs trembled as I staggered into the hallway.

Then the lights went out.

The refrigerator fell silent.

The air conditioner stopped.

Every electronic device died.

I rushed to the kitchen.

The faucet gave me nothing.

Not even a single drop of water.

Panic swallowed me whole.

I tried the front door.

The deadbolt wouldn't move.

The back door...

Locked.

I grabbed a hammer and swung it at the kitchen window.

The glass barely cracked.

Then I noticed the screws.

Every window...

Had been screwed shut from the outside.

That was the moment everything became clear.

Jason hadn't abandoned me.

He had prepared this.

My medicine was gone.

The electricity was disconnected.

The water was shut off.

The internet was dead.

The doors were sealed.

This wasn't neglect.

This was a plan.

I collapsed onto the kitchen floor.

Near the trash can...

I spotted one orange prescription bottle.

Hope exploded inside me.

I crawled toward it.

It was empty.

A small piece of tape covered the label.

Two handwritten words.

STOP PRETENDING.

Jason's handwriting.

Something inside me broke.

Then I remembered something.

Two years earlier...

We had bought an emergency phone for hurricane season.

I dug through an old kitchen drawer.

There it was.

Six percent battery.

I dialed 911.

"Emergency services. What's your location?"

"My husband locked me inside the house."

"He took all my medication."

The battery dropped.

The call disconnected.

I called again.

Four percent.

"Emily, stay with me."

"What's your address?"

I gave it.

"What city?"

I answered.

"Are you in immediate danger?"

"Yes."

The screen went black.

Complete silence.

Then...

Sirens.

Someone pounded on the front door.

"Police! Is anyone inside?"

I couldn't breathe loudly enough to answer.

I grabbed the empty prescription bottle...

And slammed it against the kitchen floor.

Again.

Again.

Again.

Heavy footsteps circled the house.

Glass shattered.

Wood splintered.

A firefighter burst through the back entrance.

He found me lying beside the kitchen table.

"My husband..."

I whispered.

"He took my pills."

The firefighter looked around.

The screwed windows.

The dead utilities.

The handwritten note.

His face changed instantly.

He grabbed his radio.

"This is no welfare check."

"Secure the property."

"We have a possible attempted homicide."

Those were the last words I heard before everything went black.

I woke up in a hospital bed.

A detective sat quietly beside me.

Laura Bennett.

She slid three photographs onto the blanket.

The first showed Jason's family leaving for the airport.

The second...

Showed Jason returning alone just minutes later.

The third showed him walking out of our house carrying a pharmacy bag.

My prescription bottles were clearly visible inside.

"He told his family he forgot his passport," Detective Bennett said.

"He spent exactly eleven minutes inside your house."

"Then he drove to the airport and boarded his flight to Paris."

I stared at the photos in disbelief.

Laura placed one final picture in front of me.

Jason...

Walking away...

Holding every medication that could have kept me alive.

She looked me straight in the eyes.

"Emily..."

May you like

"Your husband didn't forget to arrange your care."

"He deliberately removed every chance you had to survive."
