Chapter 3 - THE FOOTAGE

The video had no sound.

It didn’t need any.

The picture was clear.

Owen entered the hallway carrying a small plate of food.

He was moving carefully on his crutches.

Richard came from behind him.

He looked irritated.

Owen tried to move aside.

Richard said something.

Owen nodded.

Then Richard grabbed one of the crutches.

He yanked it out from under Owen’s arm.

Owen stumbled.

A few guests turned.

Richard tossed the crutch several feet away.

Then Owen reached for it.

And Richard kicked the boy’s remaining crutch sideways.

Owen fell.

Hard.

Sarah covered her mouth.

Owen looked away.

Eleanor paused the video.

Nobody breathed.

Richard finally spoke.

“He was going to hit me.”

Eleanor turned slowly.

“With what?”

“The crutch.”

“The one you took from him?”

Richard’s face twisted.

“You don’t understand what happened before that.”

Eleanor hit rewind.

They watched again.

No attack.

No threat.

No aggressive move from Owen.

Just a child trying to get out of a grown man’s way.

The police officer stepped closer.

“Sir, I need your identification.”

Richard laughed bitterly.

“You don’t know who I am.”

The officer’s expression didn’t change.

“Then this is a perfect time for you to show me.”

A few people laughed.

Richard glared at them.

“Anybody filming this will hear from my attorneys.”

Half the crowd immediately raised their phones higher.

Sarah almost smiled.

Then Owen cried out.

“Mom!”

She turned.

His hand was gripping his knee.

His face was covered in sweat.

“It hurts bad.”

Sarah dropped beside him.

“Okay. Don’t move.”

The officer radioed for paramedics.

Richard scoffed.

“This is theater.”

Sarah looked up at him.

“You think my son is pretending?”

“I think you’re enjoying the attention.”

Sarah rose so quickly the officer stepped between them.

“You say one more thing about my child—”

“Ma’am,” the officer said carefully. “I’ve got him.”

Richard smiled behind the officer.

That smile was almost worse than the kick.

Then Eleanor spoke.

“Richard, leave this hotel.”

He blinked.

“What?”

“You heard me.”

“Eleanor, I’m on the board.”

“Not anymore.”

“You can’t remove me.”

“I can remove you from this property.”

“You need me.”

“No.”

“You absolutely do.”

Eleanor’s eyes were ice.

“You seem to have forgotten something.”

“What?”

“The Whitmore Foundation existed before you arrived.”

Richard leaned closer.

“And it won’t survive what I know.”

That changed the room.

Eleanor’s face tightened.

Sarah noticed it.

So did the officer.

“What exactly does that mean?” Eleanor asked.

Richard looked pleased again.

“You really want to do this in public?”

Eleanor stared at him.

Richard lowered his voice.

“I know where the money went.”

Sarah frowned.

Eleanor did not move.

“What money?”

Richard smiled.

“Oh, come on, Eleanor.”

Then he looked directly at Sarah.

“You think tonight is about your kid?”

May you like

He laughed softly.

“Lady, your son just walked into something much bigger than you can imagine.”
