Chapter 14 - ONE STEP

“NO!”
Sarah moved forward.
Richard pressed the gun against Owen’s shoulder.
“Take one more step.”
Sarah stopped.
Owen was crying now.
Quietly.
“Mom…”
“I’m here.”
Benjamin backed away.
“This wasn’t the plan.”
Richard laughed.
“There is no plan anymore.”
Sirens screamed outside.
Benjamin looked toward the exit.
“We need to go.”
Richard pointed the gun at him.
“Stay.”
Benjamin froze.
Sarah realized something.
Richard was done protecting anyone.
Including Benjamin.
“You’re going to kill all of us?” Sarah asked.
“If I have to.”
“You won’t get out.”
“I’ve gotten out of worse.”
“You mean Eleanor’s husband?”
Richard’s eyes changed.
Sarah had guessed.
But the reaction told her everything.
“You did it.”
Richard smiled.
“Careful.”
“You killed him.”
Benjamin stared.
“What is she talking about?”
Richard said nothing.
Benjamin stepped forward.
“You told me he lost control of the car.”
“Shut up.”
“You said nobody was supposed to die!”
“SHUT UP!”
The gun moved away from Owen for half a second.
That was enough.
Owen swung his remaining crutch.
Hard.
It struck Richard’s wrist.
The gun fired.
Sarah screamed.
The bullet hit a metal beam.
Benjamin dove.
Sarah ran.
Richard grabbed Owen by the shirt.
Sarah hit Richard with everything she had.
They crashed into a table.
The gun slid across the floor.
Benjamin lunged for it.
A shot exploded.
Everyone froze.
Benjamin fell backward.
Blood spread across his shoulder.
Police poured through the doors.
“DROP IT!”
Richard was holding the gun again.
He grabbed Sarah and pulled her against him.
The barrel pressed under her chin.
Owen screamed,
“MOM!”
Richard dragged Sarah backward.
“Stay back!”
Police raised weapons.
“Drop the gun!”
“I will kill her!”
Sarah could feel his breath against her ear.
“You ruined everything,” he whispered.
“No.”
Her voice shook.
“You did that.”
“I had everything.”
“You had nothing.”
His grip tightened.
“I had power.”
“You had people scared of you.”
“That is power.”
Sarah looked toward Owen.
Her son was staring at her.
Terrified.
Sarah remembered what she had told him.
Never apologize for taking up space.
Never disappear because someone tells you to.
Sarah slowly moved one foot back.
Richard whispered,
“Don’t.”
She moved again.
His balance shifted.
Sarah slammed her heel onto his foot and dropped her weight.
Richard lost his grip.
Police rushed him.
He fired once into the ceiling.
Then three officers tackled him to the ground.
The gun skidded away.
Sarah crawled toward Owen.
“Owen!”
“Mom!”
She pulled him into her arms.
He sobbed against her.
Behind them, Richard screamed as officers cuffed him.
“You have no idea who I am!”
One officer pressed his face to the concrete.
“No, sir.”
He clicked the handcuffs closed.
“We know exactly who you are.”
Then Eleanor entered the warehouse.
She saw Benjamin bleeding on the floor.
She stopped.
“Ben?”
Benjamin looked at her.
“Mom…”
Eleanor walked toward him.
For one second, Sarah thought she would run to her son.
Instead, Eleanor stopped several feet away.
Tears filled her eyes.
“Tell me the truth.”
Benjamin’s face crumpled.
“Mom, please.”
“Did you know Richard was going to kill your father?”
Benjamin started crying.
May you like
And that was when everyone heard him say the words that would destroy the Whitmore family forever.
“Yes.”
