CHAPTER 4: THE ONLY FAMILY THAT MATTERED

Three months later...
The scar above Sophie's eyebrow had faded into a thin silver line.
Doctors told us she would make a full recovery.
The nightmares came less often.
One Saturday morning, we returned to the same hotel.
Not for another wedding.
For justice.
The courtroom had rented the ballroom for a victim impact hearing because of the overwhelming number of witnesses.
Preston stood before the judge wearing an orange jail uniform instead of a designer tuxedo.
He looked smaller.
Older.
Defeated.
For the first time...
He couldn't hide behind our parents.
The prosecutor played the CCTV footage one final time.
No one looked away.
When it ended, the judge removed his glasses.
"I have presided over violent crimes for twenty-seven years."
"But rarely have I seen an adult deliberately destroy a child's reputation before physically attacking her."
He sentenced Preston to years in state prison, ordered restitution for Sophie's medical expenses, and permanently barred him from contacting either of us.
As deputies led him away, he looked at me one last time.
Expecting tears.
Expecting forgiveness.
He received neither.
After the hearing, Sophie slipped her small hand into mine.
"Mommy..."
"Are the bad people gone now?"
I smiled through tears.
"Yes, sweetheart."
"They can't hurt us anymore."
She looked toward the bright afternoon sunlight spilling through the ballroom windows.
"Can we go get ice cream?"
I laughed for the first time in months.
"I think that's the best idea anyone's had all year."
We walked away together.
Not looking back.
Because I finally understood something my parents never did.

Family isn't the people who share your blood.
Family is the people who would never let you bleed alone.
