CHAPTER 2: THE FOOTAGE THAT STOPPED THE WEDDING

The first police officer entered the ballroom just as the ambulance crew rushed toward Sophie.
Preston straightened his tuxedo.
His confidence returned instantly.
He pointed at me.
"Officer, my sister's daughter stole my phone, attacked me, and now she's trying to ruin my wedding."
The officer didn't answer.
He looked at the blood running down Sophie's temple.
Then at the shattered oak menu board lying on the floor.
"What happened to the child?"
Before Preston could speak, my mother stepped forward.
"It was an accident. Preston only reacted after the little girl embarrassed our family."
The officer's expression hardened.
"An accident?"
He glanced at the board.
"This weighs nearly fifteen pounds."
No one answered.
The paramedics carefully lifted Sophie onto a stretcher.
As they wrapped a bandage around her head, she reached for my hand.
"I was good, Mommy."
"I know, sweetheart."
"I know."
A hotel manager hurried into the ballroom, pale as paper.
"Excuse me..."
He looked directly at the police officers.
"Our security department has already secured the CCTV footage."
For the first time...
Preston blinked.
"It won't show anything useful," he said too quickly.
The manager frowned.
"Actually..."
"It captured everything."
The ballroom became silent again.
Every guest turned toward Preston.
The officers followed the manager into the hotel's security office.
I wasn't invited.
Neither was Preston.
But twenty minutes later...
Everyone was summoned.
The ballroom projector flickered to life.
The first camera showed the reception.
Guests laughing.
Servers walking.
Children dancing.
Then Camera Three appeared.
Mounted directly above the ballroom entrance.
The perfect angle.
There was Sophie.
Exactly where I'd said she'd been.
Sitting beside me.
Swinging her feet.
Eating cake.
Never once leaving our table.
A murmur spread through the crowd.
Then the footage changed.
Preston walked casually toward our table.
He looked around.
Made sure no one was watching.
Reached into his jacket.
Pulled out his titanium iPhone.
Bent beside Sophie's chair.
And quietly slipped it into the pocket of her little denim jacket.
Gasps echoed through the room.
Someone whispered,
"My God..."
"He framed his own niece."
But the footage wasn't finished.
Seconds later, Preston dramatically searched for his phone.
Grabbed the microphone.
Accused Sophie.
Pulled the phone from her pocket.
Then smiled.
That same small smile I'd seen.
Only now...
More than two hundred witnesses saw it too.
The officer paused the video.
The image froze on Preston's hand placing the phone into Sophie's pocket.
The room exploded.
His new bride slowly stepped backward.
"No..."
She whispered.
"No... tell me that's fake."
The hotel manager calmly answered.
"Our security system records directly to encrypted servers."
"It cannot be edited."
The officer turned toward Preston.
"Sir..."
"I'm placing you under arrest for filing a false report and felony assault on a minor."
May you like
For the first time in his life...
No one rushed to save him.
