Chapter 9 - The Rossi Legacy

For thirty-eight years, Julian had believed his father was incapable of fear.
Now he understood why.
Giovanni Rossi had spent his entire life making sure everyone else was afraid first.
Julian stood between Elena and four armed men.
Marco lay bleeding near the shipping container.
Henry Vale moved beside Giovanni.
Julian looked at his father.
“You arranged all of this.”
Giovanni removed his gloves.
“Not all of it.”
“Enough.”
“Yes.”
Elena stared at the older man.
“You threatened me.”
Giovanni looked at her calmly.
“I protected my family.”
“You imprisoned me.”
“I prevented a catastrophe.”
Julian’s hands curled into fists.
“She was pregnant.”
“I didn’t know that at first.”
“And when you found out?”
Giovanni’s expression did not change.
“It complicated matters.”
Julian took a step.
One of the armed men raised his weapon.
Giovanni lifted a hand.
The man lowered it.
“No need.”
Giovanni looked at Julian.
“My son is angry.”
Julian almost laughed.
“Angry?”
“You’ll understand eventually.”
“I understand enough.”
“No.”
Giovanni tapped his cane against the floor.
“You understand fragments.”
He looked toward Marco.
“My older son thought he could manipulate the situation for personal advantage.”
Marco laughed bitterly from the ground.
“You mean I stopped being useful.”
Giovanni ignored him.
Julian’s eyes moved between them.
“Bellweather.”
Giovanni nodded.
“What about it?”
“Camila owns it.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because ownership on paper matters less than control.”
Julian felt sick.
“You control her.”
Giovanni smiled faintly.
“Camila controls herself.”
“Then why did you put her in my life?”
“To stabilize you.”
Julian stared.
“Stabilize me?”
“You were becoming irrational.”
“My wife disappeared.”
“Yes.”
“And you were spending millions searching for her.”
“Because she was my wife.”
“And because of that, you began asking questions.”
Giovanni’s eyes hardened.
“Questions that endangered everything this family built.”
Elena spoke.
“Money laundering.”
Giovanni turned toward her.
“Such an ugly phrase.”
“You used Julian’s companies.”
“I used assets.”
“You forged his authorization.”
“I protected the organization.”
Julian’s voice was low.
“What organization?”
Giovanni smiled.
“Rossi International.”
“No.”
Julian shook his head.
“This is bigger than Rossi International.”
The silence told him he was right.
He remembered the folders on the drive.
Political donations.
Shipping companies.
Offshore accounts.
Construction subsidiaries.
This was not tax fraud.
This was infrastructure.
A network.
Giovanni watched realization spread across his son’s face.
“You were always intelligent.”
Julian stared at him.
“What have you been moving through my ports?”
Giovanni did not answer.
“What have you been hiding inside my construction contracts?”
Still nothing.
Julian stepped closer.
“Tell me.”
Giovanni sighed.
“Influence.”
Julian laughed once.
“That means nothing.”
“It means everything.”
Giovanni spread his hands.
“Politicians need campaigns.”
“Companies need permits.”
“Governments need favors.”
“Men who pretend to hate corruption still need someone willing to handle it.”
Julian’s stomach turned.
“You built my company on blackmail.”
“I built your company on reality.”
“No.”
“You built it on crime.”
Giovanni’s face finally hardened.
“You think those towers appeared because you were clever?”
Julian said nothing.
“You think ports were approved because committees admired your presentations?”
“You think billion-dollar infrastructure deals are awarded because the world is fair?”
Giovanni stepped closer.
“You inherited a machine.”
“And then convinced yourself you invented the engine.”
The words landed.
Julian hated that part of him believed them.
Elena spoke quietly.
“That’s why you had to get rid of me.”
Giovanni looked at her.
“You found records that were never meant for you.”
“I found them in my husband’s home.”
“They were Marco’s responsibility.”
Marco laughed bitterly.
“Everything was always my responsibility when it went wrong.”
Giovanni ignored him again.
Elena continued.
“You could have destroyed the files.”
“We tried.”
“You could have killed me.”
Julian turned sharply toward his father.
Giovanni met his eyes.
Elena’s voice remained steady.
“But you didn’t.”
Giovanni looked at her stomach.
“No.”
“Why?”
For the first time, something human appeared in his face.
Not kindness.
Calculation softened by blood.
“Because you were family.”
Elena stared at him.
Julian’s face twisted.
“You call this family?”
“I kept her alive.”
“You made her terrified to contact me.”
“I made sure you stayed alive too.”
Julian froze.
“What does that mean?”
Giovanni looked toward Marco.
Marco’s face changed.
Julian noticed.
“The car crash.”
Giovanni said nothing.
Julian turned toward his brother.
“The truck that hit my car.”
Marco looked away.
Julian walked toward him.
“Was that you?”
Marco breathed heavily through the pain in his leg.
“Julian.”
“Was that you?”
Marco laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because he had nothing left.
“Yes.”
Elena covered her mouth.
Julian stared down at his brother.
“You tried to kill me.”
Marco’s eyes filled with hatred.
“I tried to scare her.”
“You destroyed an armored Mercedes.”
“You weren’t supposed to be inside.”
“You couldn’t know that.”
“I knew your schedule.”
Julian crouched.
“And if I had followed it?”
Marco said nothing.
Julian grabbed his coat.
“If I had been in that car?”
Giovanni’s cane struck the concrete.
“Enough.”
Julian released Marco.
He slowly stood.
His father continued.
“Marco exceeded his instructions.”
“Instructions?”
Julian turned.
“You authorized an attack?”
“I authorized pressure.”
Elena stared at Giovanni.
“You knew.”
“Yes.”
Julian’s face became empty.
Something inside him died.
Not violently.
Quietly.
The final illusion of his father.
Gone.
Giovanni studied him.
“Give me the drives.”
Julian laughed.
“You think that’s happening?”
“I think you have no choice.”
Julian looked toward the armed men.
Then Elena.
Then Marco.
Then Henry.
Four against one.
Maybe five.
But Giovanni had made one mistake.
He still believed Julian had come alone.
Julian reached slowly into his jacket.
The armed men reacted.
“Easy.”
He pulled out the second drive.
Held it up.
Giovanni stared.
“This?”
Julian asked.
“This is what everyone is dying for?”
“Give it to me.”
Julian looked at Henry.
Then Marco.
Then his father.
“No.”
Giovanni’s eyes darkened.
Julian snapped the flash drive in half.
Elena gasped.
Marco shouted.
Henry raised his weapon.
Giovanni did not move.
For one second, nobody breathed.
Then Giovanni smiled.
A slow smile.
“You think that was the real one?”
Julian stared at him.
Giovanni reached into his coat.
He removed a flash drive.
Identical.
Elena went pale.
Giovanni held it between two fingers.
“You were never carrying the evidence.”
Julian’s stomach dropped.
May you like
Giovanni looked at Elena.
“She was.”
