Chapter 14 - The Night Everything Changed

Elena went into labor inside an ambulance.
Julian rode beside her.
His hand never left hers.
“You’re crushing my fingers.”
Elena breathed through another contraction.
“Good.”
Julian almost laughed.
“I deserve that.”
“You deserve worse.”
“I know.”
Another contraction hit.
Elena screamed.
Julian immediately panicked.
“Is that normal?”
The paramedic looked at him.
“Yes.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
“Her blood pressure?”
“Stable.”
“The baby?”
“Stable.”
“Then why is she screaming?”
Elena glared at him.
“Because I am having your child.”
Julian stopped talking.
The paramedic tried not to smile.
They reached the hospital eleven minutes later.
Doctors rushed Elena upstairs.
Julian followed until a nurse stopped him.
“You need to change.”
“I’m not leaving her.”
“You aren’t.”
She handed him scrubs.
“Change.”
He did it in less than a minute.
When he returned, Elena was gripping the bedrail.
Sweat covered her face.
She looked exhausted.
Beautiful.
Terrified.
Julian sat beside her.
“I’m here.”
Elena looked at him.
“Don’t leave.”
“I won’t.”
“You already did once.”
The words hit him.
She immediately closed her eyes.
“I’m sorry.”
“No.”
Julian touched her hand.
“You’re right.”
She looked at him.
“I believed you abandoned me.”
“You had every reason to.”
“No.”
He shook his head.
“I had evidence that fit what I wanted to believe.”
“I was angry.”
“I was hurt.”
“And eventually I stopped asking questions.”
Elena swallowed.
“I should have trusted you enough to come back.”
“You were threatened.”
“I still should have tried.”
Julian looked at her.
“We can spend the next twenty years deciding which one of us failed more.”
Elena gave a weak laugh.
“Twenty?”
“At least.”
Another contraction hit.
She crushed his hand again.
Hours passed.
Outside the delivery room, the Rossi empire collapsed in real time.
Adrian sent updates.
Police arrested Giovanni.
Marco was taken into custody under guard.
Henry agreed to testify.
Victor Dane died before reaching surgery.
Federal investigators in three countries received copies of the chip.
Bellweather’s accounts were frozen.
Rossi International’s board suspended Julian’s father permanently.
Julian read every update.
Then turned off his phone.
For once, the company could survive without him.
At 4:18 a.m., Elena screamed one final time.
Then another sound filled the room.
A baby crying.
Julian stopped breathing.
The doctor smiled.
“It’s a girl.”
Elena collapsed back against the pillows.
Tears streamed down her face.
Julian stared at the tiny child in the nurse’s hands.
Dark hair.
Red face.
Tiny fists.
Furious at the entire world.
He laughed.
Then he cried.
He did not care who saw.
The nurse placed the baby against Elena’s chest.
Elena looked down.
“Hi.”
Her voice broke.
Julian sat beside them.
The baby opened her eyes.
Julian whispered.
“She’s perfect.”
Elena looked at him.
“She’s loud.”
“So are you.”
Elena almost smiled.
“Careful.”
Julian touched the baby’s tiny hand.
She wrapped her fingers around one of his.
And something inside him changed.
His father had spent a lifetime confusing control with love.
Marco had confused survival with loyalty.
Camila had confused revenge with justice.
Julian had confused possession with trust.
This tiny child understood none of those things.
She only held his finger.
“What do we call her?”
Elena looked at him.
“I had a name.”
“What?”
She hesitated.
“Isabella.”
Julian smiled.
“My mother loved that name.”
Elena stared at him.
“She told me.”
Julian froze.
“What?”
Elena smiled weakly.
“Years ago.”
“Before we married.”
“She said if we ever had a daughter…”
Julian looked down at the baby.
“Isabella.”
The infant yawned.
Elena laughed through tears.
“Isabella Rossi.”
Julian kissed Elena’s forehead.
For several minutes, there were no companies.
No secrets.
No revenge.
Only three people in a hospital room.
Then the door opened.
Camila stood outside.
She had changed clothes.
There was dried blood on her sleeve.
She looked unsure whether she should enter.
Julian stared at her.
Elena looked toward him.
Neither spoke.
Camila whispered.
“I can go.”
Julian looked down at Isabella.
Then back at Camila.
“No.”
Camila stopped.
Julian nodded toward the chair.
“Come in.”
Her eyes filled.
She entered slowly.
Camila stood beside the bed.
She looked at the baby.
“She looks like Mother.”
Julian swallowed.
“You remember her?”
“No.”
Camila smiled sadly.
“Only photographs.”
Silence.
Then Elena lifted Isabella slightly.
“Do you want to hold your niece?”
Camila stared at her.
“After everything I did?”
Elena answered quietly.
“You helped save her too.”
Camila looked at Julian.
He did not forgive her.
Not yet.
Maybe not for a long time.
But forgiveness did not have to begin with forgetting.
Sometimes it began with allowing someone to sit in the room.
Julian nodded.
Camila took Isabella carefully.
The baby immediately began crying.
Camila panicked.
“What did I do?”
Elena laughed.
“Nothing.”
Julian smiled for the first time in what felt like years.
“She already knows you’re trouble.”
May you like
Camila laughed through tears.
And for one fragile moment, the family Giovanni Rossi had spent decades destroying began to look like a family again.
