hapter 4 — Home Again

Three months later...

The little brick house smelled of cinnamon and fresh bread.

Sunlight poured through clean windows.

Family photographs covered the walls.

In the newest frame...

Emily smiled from the old faded picture.

Beside it stood another photograph.

Sarah.

Noah.

And the little girl in the yellow coat, whose name was Lily.

After that day, Sarah completed every legal process necessary to become Noah's guardian.

She refused to let him spend another night alone.

Lily's parents became close friends with Sarah's family.

The two children became inseparable.

Every Sunday, they visited Emily's grave together.

Noah always brought fresh flowers.

One afternoon, while Sarah worked in the kitchen, Noah carefully unfolded the old photograph one last time.

It was cracked.

Faded.

Nearly falling apart.

Sarah walked over.

"You don't have to carry it everywhere anymore."

Noah smiled gently.

"I know."

He placed the photograph inside a wooden frame and set it on the fireplace.

"It doesn't have to stay in my pocket."

"It already lives here."

He touched his heart.

Sarah pulled him into a warm embrace.

Outside, snow began falling softly across the quiet neighborhood.

Inside, laughter echoed through the house.

For the first time in many years...

Noah wasn't waiting anymore.

May you like

He was home.

The End.
