Chapter 3 — The Truth Emily Never Told

The woman introduced herself.

"My name is Sarah."

She reached for Noah's hand but stopped halfway.

She didn't want to frighten him.

"Can I tell you something about your mom?"

Noah nodded.

Sarah smiled through her tears.

"Emily loved you more than her own life."

Noah looked at the photograph.

"I remember her singing."

"She always sang."

Sarah laughed softly.

"She couldn't cook to save her life... but she sang every single day."

For the first time in years...

Noah smiled.

Only a little.

But it was enough.

Sarah took a slow breath.

"Your mom wasn't homeless."

Noah looked confused.

"She was running."

"Running from who?"

Sarah looked away.

"Your father."

The air turned heavy.

"He was dangerous."

"When Emily found out he was involved with violent criminals, she took you and left."

"She spent years hiding."

"Changing cities."

"Changing names."

"Doing everything she could to protect you."

Noah's small hands tightened.

"Where is she now?"

Sarah closed her eyes.

"There was an accident."

"A truck lost control during a snowstorm."

"Emily pushed you out of the way."

"You survived."

"She didn't."

Noah didn't cry.

He simply stared at the photograph.

As if he already knew.

"As she was dying..."

Sarah's voice shook.

"She kept saying one sentence."

"'Promise me my little boy will never think I abandoned him.'"

The words shattered whatever strength Sarah had left.

She began to sob.

Noah slowly walked toward her.

Then wrapped his tiny arms around her.

"I know."

He whispered.

"I never thought she left me."

Sarah cried harder.

The little girl in the yellow coat quietly hugged both of them.

Around them, strangers lowered their heads.

Some wiped away tears.

Others silently walked into nearby stores and returned carrying blankets, food, warm clothes, and shoes.

Kindness spread through the street without anyone saying a word.
