Chapter 9 - THE CALL THAT CHANGED THE BATTLE

The drive home was silent.
But this time, it wasn’t painful silence.
It was peaceful.
For years, I had been carrying something heavy.
A responsibility that was never mine.
Claire reached over and touched my hand.
“You okay?”
I nodded.
“I think so.”
She looked out the window.
“You know what hurts the most?”
“What?”
“You loved them.”
I swallowed.
“Yes.”
“That’s why this hurts.”
She was right.
Anger was easy.
Disappointment was harder.
Because anger meant you still expected something.
Disappointment meant you finally accepted reality.
When we got home, I placed the folders on the table.
Then I did something I should have done years ago.
I called an attorney.
Not my parents’ attorney.
Mine.
His name was James Walker.
He listened quietly while I explained everything.
The house.
The documents.
The company agreement.
The missing pages.
When I finished, he was silent for a moment.
Then he said:
“Daniel, I need you to understand something.”
“What?”
“Your family didn’t make one mistake.”
I waited.
“They created a pattern.”
That sentence stayed with me.
A pattern.
Not one bad day.
Not one misunderstanding.
Years of choices.
“What happens now?” I asked.
James answered calmly.
“First, we verify every document.”
“And then?”
“Then we protect your assets.”
I looked at Claire.
She nodded.
“Do it.”
James continued.
“There is one more thing.”
“What?”
“Your father contacted another attorney this morning.”
My stomach tightened.
“About what?”
“Your property.”
Of course.
He wasn’t trying to apologize.
He was preparing.
“What did he say?”
James hesitated.
“He claims you transferred ownership years ago.”
I laughed bitterly.
“Of course he does.”
“But Daniel…”
“Yes?”
“He also mentioned something else.”
“What?”
James lowered his voice.
“He said he has witnesses.”
I frowned.
“Witnesses to what?”
A pause.
Then:
“To you agreeing verbally to give your parents the house permanently.”
I felt my blood run cold.
Because there was one person who had been in that room four years ago.
One person who heard the conversation.
One person who knew exactly what happened.
And I suddenly realized…
My father wasn’t fighting alone.
He had someone helping him.
Someone I never expected.
My phone buzzed.
A message appeared.
From my mother.
Daniel, we need to talk. There is something I never told you about that day you bought the house.
I stared at the screen.
Then another message arrived.
Your father doesn’t know I’m sending this.
I looked at Claire.
“What?”
I showed her.
She read the message.
Then whispered:
“Daniel…”
“What?”
She pointed at the screen.
“Your mother is afraid of him.”
And for the first time since this started…
May you like
I wondered if the person I thought was my enemy…
Might be the person who could finally reveal the truth.
