Chapter 5 - THE SECRET MY MOTHER HID

After my parents left, the house felt strangely quiet.

Too quiet.

Claire sat at the kitchen table with the document in front of her.

She had been reading the same page for almost ten minutes.

“What are you thinking?” I asked.

She looked up.

“I’m thinking your mother planned this carefully.”

I sat down.

“What do you mean?”

Claire tapped the paper.

“This isn’t something someone creates overnight.”

She pointed at the signature.

“The timing matters.”

I looked at it.

Four years earlier.

The same month I bought the house.

The same month I trusted them.

My stomach tightened.

“Do you think they tricked me?”

Claire didn’t answer immediately.

That scared me.

Because Claire always tried to find another explanation.

But this time…

She couldn’t.

“I think they took advantage of the fact that you loved them.”

Those words hurt because they were true.

I remembered that night.

The night my mother cried on the phone.

“Daniel, please.”

“Your father can’t lose everything.”

I remembered driving to their house.

I remembered seeing my father sitting silently in the kitchen.

Looking defeated.

I remembered thinking:

I’m saving my family.

But maybe…

I was only giving them a reason to expect more.

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

“Hello?”

A woman’s voice responded.

“Is this Daniel Carter?”

“Yes.”

“My name is Linda Brooks. I’m an attorney.”

I sat up.

“An attorney?”

“Yes. I was reviewing a property file connected to your parents.”

My eyes moved toward Claire.

“Why?”

There was a pause.

“Because something doesn’t look right.”

My heart started beating faster.

“What do you mean?”

“I mean the document your father showed you today may not be complete.”

Claire immediately reached for a pen.

“What document?”

Linda continued.

“The agreement signed four years ago.”

I stood up.

“Who gave you my information?”

“Your mother.”

The room became cold.

“My mother?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Another pause.

Then she said:

“Because she recently asked me how to enforce the agreement against you.”

I felt like the floor moved beneath me.

“She asked you to enforce it?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Two weeks ago.”

Two weeks.

Before the shoe.

Before the argument.

Before the house went for sale.

This wasn’t a reaction.

It was already planned.

Claire whispered:

“Daniel…”

I covered the phone.

“She was preparing something.”

Linda continued.

“I can’t discuss everything over the phone, but I suggest you find the complete original agreement.”

“Where?”

“The attorney who prepared it should have a copy.”

“Who was that?”

She gave me a name.

A lawyer who worked with my father years ago.

Then she said something else.

“Mr. Carter…”

“Yes?”

“Be careful.”

“Why?”

“Because based on what I’ve seen…”

She paused.

“Your family may not be fighting to keep the house.”

I swallowed.

“What are they fighting for?”

Her answer came quietly.

“Control.”

That evening, I searched every file I had.

Every email.

Every contract.

Every receipt.

And then I found something.

A payment.

A large payment.

From my father.

To the attorney who prepared the paperwork.

The date was three days before I signed.

I stared at the screen.

Because my father told me the lawyer was there to protect me.

But the payment came from him.

Not me.

Claire looked over my shoulder.

“Daniel.”

I nodded.

“I know.”

“You need to find that lawyer.”

“I will.”

Then my phone buzzed.

A message from Melissa.

I opened it.

And immediately regretted it.

You should know Dad has proof. Mom warned us you might become greedy someday.

I stared at the screen.

Greedy.

That was what they called me.

The person who paid their debt.

The person who saved their home.

The person who supported them for years.

I showed Claire.

She didn’t say anything.

She just looked sad.

Then another message appeared.

From Melissa.

By the way, Dad said if you keep pushing this, he’ll tell everyone the truth about what you signed.

I looked at Claire.

“What truth?”

Before she could answer…

My phone rang.

It was the lawyer.

The one who created the document four years ago.

And the first thing he said was:

“Daniel, before we talk…”

May you like

A pause.

“You need to know your father was never supposed to have that copy.”
