Chapter 8 - The Man at the Gate

They found Mercer at a boat repair yard south of the city.

Lorenzo wanted to go himself.

Nora looked at him across the study.

“If he vanishes after this, every lawyer Charles hires will make you the story.”

“He threatened a child.”

“Then give the police evidence that proves it.”

The words tasted wrong in his house.

For most of his adult life, police had been people to evade, bribe through intermediaries, or outlast.

Now he handed Nora the payment records.

Rocco went with the investigators as the estate’s reporting representative.

He came back three hours later.

“Mercer’s talking.”

Lorenzo stayed still.

“What does relocation mean?”

“He says he was supposed to take Elena and Mia to a rental outside the city. Keep them there until after the property transfer.”

“Keep them how?”

“He calls it persuasion.”

Lorenzo looked toward the window.

Rocco continued.

“He told the gate guard Elena had agreed. The coat was supposed to make the change look normal.”

“Did the guard know?”

“Not according to Mercer. We’re checking.”

“And Charles?”

“Says Vivien paid him directly.”

Lorenzo laughed once without humor.

“Eleven years.”

Rocco put something on the desk.

Mercer’s estate access card.

“Time doesn’t make somebody loyal.”

“No.”

“It just gives them more keys.”

That afternoon, Nora brought another finding.

Charles’s companies were collapsing under private debt. The marriage announcement had already been used to reassure lenders. Teresa’s property was the asset he needed to keep them from calling their loans.

Vivien hadn’t simply wanted a rich husband.

She had needed a deadline.

Six weeks until the wedding.

Twelve days until one of the forged documents allowed a transfer to proceed.

“What happens now?” Lorenzo asked.

“We seek an emergency order stopping any transaction. Your mother gives a supported statement. Elena gives hers if she chooses.”

“If she chooses?”

Nora met his eyes.

“She’s a witness, Lorenzo. Not something you own.”

He accepted the correction.

Then his phone lit up.

Vivien.

A photograph.

Elena stood outside a grocery store with Mia on her hip. It had been taken that morning.

Beneath it was a message.

We should discuss why you’re letting staff embarrass this family.

He called Denise.

“Are they with you?”

“They’re inside. What happened?”

“Close the curtains. Call the investigator Nora gave you.”

His next call was to Vivien.

She answered brightly.

“Finally.”

“Where are you?”

“At home. Waiting for you.”

He looked at the photograph again.

For the first time, he understood that removing Mercer had not removed the eyes on Elena.

It had only removed the man he knew about.
