Chapter 12 - A Mother’s Name

Elena had never hated a piece of paper before.
Now she sat in an interview room staring at one that suggested someone else could speak for her daughter.
The investigator across from her introduced herself again.
Detective Hannah Ruiz.
“You’re not under arrest, Ms. Hayes.”
“Then where’s Mia?”
“With Denise and our family liaison. Right outside.”
“I want the door open.”
Ruiz opened it.
Elena could see Mia’s sneakers beneath a chair.
Only then could she breathe.
Nora sat beside her.
“We brought the original birth certificate, employment records, and messages establishing that Mia lived at the estate with Elena as part of her housing arrangement.”
Ruiz nodded.
“We’ve also spoken to the hospital staff from last night.”
Elena looked at the forged guardianship letter.
“That isn’t my signature.”
“We’re checking.”
“She wants me scared.”
“Yes,” Ruiz said. “That appears likely.”
The plain agreement nearly undid her.
For months, every complaint had met a smile, a correction, or a warning about gratitude.
Now somebody wrote it down.
Elena told the whole story.
The lost wages. The hidden phone. The bracelet. The bottle against the mirror.
The threats framed as advice.
By the time she finished, her coffee was cold.
Outside, Lorenzo waited at the far end of the hallway.
He didn’t approach until Elena looked at him.
“Did you know about this?”
“No.”
“She put her name above mine.”
“I saw.”
“She thought a letter would make me stop being Mia’s mother.”
His expression tightened.
Elena shook her head before he spoke.
“Don’t promise to destroy her. Just tell the truth when they ask.”
“I will.”
That evening, investigators confirmed the letter’s named witness had been overseas on the supposed signing date.
The emergency claim collapsed.
The threat behind it did not.
At the estate, preparations continued for the engagement dinner.
Lorenzo had told the guests only that an important family announcement would be made.
Nora objected to turning it into a performance.
He agreed.
There would be no public ambush, no child on display, no speech exposing Elena’s private pain.
Charles and Vivien would arrive believing they still had leverage.
Investigators already had the evidence.
Then Teresa’s evening medication tray went missing.
Denise called from upstairs.
“Lorenzo, come now.”
He took the steps two at a time.
Teresa was alert and safe.
The pills had not reached her.
May you like
But someone had replaced her normal sealed medication pack with a loose cup of tablets.
And Vivien’s purse was sitting on the chair beside the bed.
