Chapter 8 - The Account Behind the Ring

Rocco found the answer in an email Vivien had sent to a private care facility.
Not a confirmed placement.
An inquiry.
Long-term admission. Restricted visitors preferred during adjustment.
The message described Lorenzo’s mother as confused, aggressive, and unable to participate in family decisions.
Lorenzo read it twice.
Then he set the phone down carefully.
“She was arranging to remove her.”
Nora sat across from him.
“She was exploring it. We should describe exactly what the record shows.”
“You think I care about wording?”
“I think Elena needs you to.”
That stopped him.
Through the open door, he could hear Mia asking whether fish slept.
His mother was trying to answer.
Ordinary sounds.
A life Vivien had been turning into leverage.
Rocco placed a second folder on the desk.
Adrian Vale’s investment company was drowning in debt.
Several loans were coming due within sixty days.
Vivien had personally guaranteed one.
“How much?” Lorenzo asked.
Rocco pointed.
Lorenzo gave a short, humorless laugh.
“The wedding money wouldn’t cover half of it.”
“No,” Rocco said. “But control of your mother’s waterfront shares might get them another lender.”
There it was.
The hurried ceremony.
The sudden interest in family accounts.
The constant pressure to “simplify things” before the wedding.
Nora examined copies of documents supplied by the family accountant.
“These draft authorizations were sent for preliminary review. Nobody approved them.”
“Who sent them?”
“Vivien.”
Elena appeared with a tray.
Lorenzo stood.
“You don’t need to serve us.”
“I know.”
She put the tray down.
“I also know nobody here has eaten since breakfast.”
Rocco reached for a sandwich.
Elena looked at the papers.
“So that’s what we were in the way of.”
Lorenzo said nothing.
She nodded once, as though something inside her had settled into place.
“My daughter was scared for three months because somebody owed money.”
“Not because of money,” Lorenzo said. “Because Vivien chose to threaten her.”
Elena looked at him.
This time, she didn’t look away.
His phone lit up.
Vivien.
Dinner tomorrow. Just family. Adrian is coming. We should finalize the arrangements for your mother.
Lorenzo showed Nora the screen.
“Now she asks me.”
Nora’s expression sharpened.
“What changed?”
May you like
A second message arrived.
And we need to discuss Elena before she causes another problem.
