Chapter 3 - What Silence Cost

Lorenzo found Elena in his mother’s sitting room after Mia fell asleep.

The child lay curled beneath a knitted blanket, one hand tangled in her mother’s skirt.

Across the room, Lorenzo’s mother watched from her wheelchair.

The stroke had weakened her right side and slowed her speech. It had done nothing to soften her eyes.

“Tell,” she said to Elena.

Elena looked down.

Lorenzo sat instead of standing over her.

“Vivien used my name to shut off cameras.”

Elena’s fingers tightened around the blanket.

“You knew?”

“I knew they stopped working.”

“Why didn’t you come to me?”

His mother struck the arm of her chair.

Once.

Hard.

Lorenzo turned.

She fought for the words.

“Wrong… question.”

He looked back at Elena.

Her expression told him his mother was right.

“What made you believe you couldn’t?” he asked.

Elena stared at him for several seconds.

Then she reached into her pocket and took out a folded sheet of paper.

The paper was soft at the creases.

A formal notice on Duca household stationery.

Any further misconduct involving Elena Hayes or her dependent will result in immediate termination and removal from the property.

His signature sat at the bottom.

Lorenzo felt something cold spread through his chest.

“I didn’t sign this.”

“She said you were tired of complaints.”

“What complaints?”

“Mia laughing in the garden. Toys in the sitting room. Your mother asking for me after my shift.”

Elena spoke evenly, but her knuckles had gone white.

“She showed me the notice after I tried to leave you a message.”

“With whom?”

“The house manager.”

Lorenzo looked toward the door.

The house manager had resigned five weeks earlier.

Vivien had recommended his replacement.

Elena continued.

“She said if I caused trouble, she’d report me for stealing. She knew I couldn’t afford a lawyer.”

“You could have left.”

“Yes,” Elena said. “I could have taken my child out of school, lost our room, lost my paycheck, and left your mother with someone who frightened her.”

His mother reached for Elena’s wrist.

Lorenzo lowered his eyes.

There was no answer that could make that smaller.

“I’m sorry,” he said.

Elena looked surprised.

He hated that, too.

His phone buzzed.

Rocco had recovered the original security request.

Attached was a second document.

A draft incident report, already completed except for the date.

Employee Elena Hayes observed removing jewelry from the primary bedroom.

At the bottom was an empty line labeled:

Items recovered from child’s belongings.
