Chapter 8 - VANESSA TALKS

Vanessa stopped pretending.
When her attorney learned about Thomas Vale’s recording, he asked for a private meeting with prosecutors.
Vanessa wanted immunity.
She wasn’t getting it.
But she was willing to trade information for consideration.
Daniel watched the interview through a monitor.
Sarah sat across from Vanessa.
“Start from the beginning.”
Vanessa looked exhausted.
“Margaret found me.”
“How?”
“I worked at a financial planning firm.”
“You had access to trust accounts?”
“Yes.”
“Lily’s?”
“Not at first.”
Vanessa rubbed her wrists.
“Margaret knew about Melissa’s inheritance. She said it belonged with the Carter family.”
“Why?”
“Because Daniel would eventually marry Melissa. Margaret thought everything should become family property.”
“But the trust remained separate.”
“Yes.”
“So Margaret pressured Melissa.”
“Yes.”
“And you helped?”
“I passed information.”
“Then Melissa died.”
Vanessa looked away.
“I didn’t know Thomas was going to cut the brake line.”
“You delivered him cash.”
“Margaret said he was helping with something.”
Sarah stared at her.
“You expect us to believe that?”
“I knew she wanted Melissa scared. I didn’t know she wanted her dead.”
“And afterward you married Daniel.”
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
“At first it was supposed to be temporary.”
Daniel nearly punched the monitor.
Sarah remained calm.
“Explain.”
“Margaret wanted someone close to Daniel. Someone who could eventually become Lily’s legal guardian.”
“So you married a grieving man to gain access to his daughter’s trust.”
Vanessa nodded.
Then she whispered, “But I fell in love with him.”
Daniel laughed bitterly from behind the glass.
Sarah heard it through the wall speaker.
“So you loved him.”
“Yes.”
“And you abused his daughter.”
Vanessa started crying.
“Lily hated me.”
“She was a baby.”
“She screamed whenever I touched her.”
“Maybe children know more than adults.”
Vanessa looked down.
Sarah continued.
“Whose idea was the basement?”
Vanessa didn’t answer.
“Vanessa.”
“Margaret’s.”
“But you used it.”
“Yes.”
“How often?”
“I don’t know.”
“Try.”
Vanessa whispered, “Three or four times a week.”
Daniel stood.
Jonathan grabbed his arm.
“Don’t go in there.”
Daniel’s entire body shook.
Sarah asked, “How long was Lily left inside?”
“Usually ten minutes.”
“Usually?”
Vanessa cried harder.
“One time… maybe an hour.”
Daniel covered his face.
Sarah’s voice sharpened.
“Why?”
“She wouldn’t stop calling for Daniel.”
The room felt airless.
“And food?”
“Margaret said hunger makes children obedient.”
Daniel turned away.
Jonathan looked sick.
Then Sarah asked the question Daniel needed answered.
“Who else knew?”
Vanessa wiped her eyes.
“Everyone.”
Sarah paused.
“The relatives at dinner?”
“Most of them.”
“They saw Lily being mistreated?”
“Yes.”
“Why did nobody intervene?”
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“Because Margaret paid them.”
Daniel slowly turned back.
Vanessa continued.
“Eric got money. Cynthia got money. Robert got money. Everybody needed something.”
Daniel looked at Jonathan.
“From Lily’s trust?”
Jonathan whispered, “Probably.”
Sarah asked, “Did Eric take money?”
Vanessa hesitated.
“Yes.”
Daniel’s heart sank.
The brother who installed the camera.
The brother who claimed he wanted proof.
He had taken Lily’s money too.
“How much?” Sarah asked.
Vanessa looked directly toward the one-way mirror.
Almost as if she knew Daniel was behind it.
“Ask him about the house.”
Daniel frowned.
“What house?”
Vanessa smiled faintly.
“The house Margaret bought him.”
Daniel turned to Jonathan.
Jonathan was already searching financial records.
Thirty seconds later, he stopped.
“Daniel.”
“What?”
Jonathan showed him the screen.
A property transfer.
Eric Carter.
Purchase price: $620,000.
Funding source hidden behind an LLC.
But the LLC had received a distribution from Lily’s trust two days earlier.
Daniel stared at the screen.
Then his phone buzzed.
Eric had sent a message.
DAN, I NEED TO TELL YOU THE TRUTH BEFORE MOM DOES.
Daniel immediately called.
No answer.
Again.
Nothing.
Then a second message arrived.
COME ALONE.
There was an address beneath it.
Daniel recognized the location.
May you like
It was Melissa’s old family cabin.
The place where she had once told Daniel she wanted Lily to grow up feeling safe.
