Chapter 6 - MELISSA’S LAST NIGHT

Daniel hadn’t spoken Melissa’s name this much in two years.

Now every memory hurt.

Melissa laughing in the kitchen.

Melissa barefoot on their balcony.

Melissa placing Daniel’s hand over her pregnant belly.

Melissa saying, “Promise me she’ll always know she was wanted.”

He had promised.

And somehow his daughter had ended up locked in a basement.

Jonathan obtained Melissa’s old phone backup.

Most of it was ordinary.

Photos.

Shopping lists.

Messages with friends.

Then they found a hidden folder.

Inside was a voice memo recorded the night before Melissa died.

Daniel sat alone in Jonathan’s office when he pressed play.

Melissa’s voice filled the room.

“If something happens to me, I need Daniel to know I didn’t agree to any of this.”

Daniel froze.

There was a pause.

Then Melissa continued.

“Margaret keeps asking me to sign documents giving her authority over Lily’s inheritance. She says Daniel isn’t good with money, which is insane. This has nothing to do with Daniel.”

Daniel clenched his fists.

“She wants control.”

Melissa inhaled shakily.

“And tonight she threatened me.”

Jonathan glanced at Daniel.

The recording continued.

“She said families protect their own wealth. But this money isn’t theirs. It’s Lily’s.”

Another pause.

“I’m meeting attorney Michael Barnes tomorrow morning. I’m changing everything. Margaret will never have access to Lily’s trust.”

The recording ended.

Daniel stared at the phone.

For a full minute, nobody spoke.

Finally Jonathan said, “We give this to Detective Mills.”

Daniel nodded.

Sarah reopened Melissa’s accident investigation that afternoon.

The original report said mechanical failure was possible but never proven.

Daniel learned something else.

The car had been destroyed three weeks after the accident.

Authorized by Margaret.

“She told me it was too painful to keep,” Daniel said.

Sarah looked at the paperwork.

“She signed the release.”

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“She handled everything while I was grieving.”

“Which gave her access to everything.”

Daniel hated the truth of it.

Meanwhile, Vanessa finally asked for a lawyer.

She had spent twenty-four hours insisting the basement was only “discipline.”

Then she learned investigators were reviewing financial fraud.

Her story changed.

“I didn’t steal anything,” she said.

Sarah sat across from her.

“You signed withdrawal requests.”

“Margaret told me they were legal.”

“You purchased a seventy-eight-thousand-dollar SUV using money from Lily’s trust.”

“She said it was reimbursement.”

“For what?”

“Childcare.”

Sarah looked at her.

“You locked the child in a basement.”

Vanessa’s face tightened.

“I did what Margaret told me.”

“So Margaret ordered you to hurt Lily?”

Vanessa realized the trap.

“I didn’t say that.”

“You just did.”

Vanessa demanded a break.

Before Sarah left, Vanessa said quietly, “Ask Daniel why Margaret chose me.”

Sarah turned.

“What?”

“She didn’t just approve of our marriage.”

Vanessa gave a tired smile.

“She arranged it.”

That night, Daniel confronted Eric.

“Did Mom introduce me to Vanessa?”

Eric nodded.

“At that fundraiser.”

Daniel remembered.

Eight months after Melissa died.

He hadn’t wanted to go.

Margaret insisted.

Vanessa had sat beside him.

Kind.

Patient.

Perfect.

Too perfect.

“You knew?”

“Not then.”

“When did you realize?”

Eric looked ashamed.

Daniel stepped closer.

“And you said nothing.”

“I was scared.”

“Of Mom?”

“Yes.”

Daniel almost mocked him.

Then Eric pulled out his phone.

“You should be too.”

He opened an old photograph.

It showed Margaret standing outside a restaurant.

Beside her was Vanessa.

The date in the corner was clearly visible.

Three months before Melissa died.

Daniel stared at it.

“You said I met Vanessa after Melissa died.”

“That’s when you met her.”

Eric swallowed.

“But Mom knew her long before that.”

Daniel looked closer at the photo.

There was a third person at the table.

A man.

Daniel recognized him immediately.

His name was Thomas Vale.

And he had been the mechanic who serviced Melissa’s car the day before she died.
