Chapter 1: The Secret Inside the Cup

I didn't sleep that night.

Not because I was tired.

Because every time I closed my eyes, I saw my son lying on that kitchen floor.

I saw his terrified face.

I heard his voice.

“Cut him open, Dad…”

A seven-year-old child should never know that kind of fear.

And a father should never have to wonder if the person standing beside him is the one causing it.

But I had learned something about Celeste.

She was always perfect when people were watching.

The perfect wife.

The perfect stepmother.

The perfect victim.

But when nobody was looking…

The mask slipped.

At 2:13 in the morning, I sat alone in my office, staring at the plastic evidence bag Mara had given me.

The blue chocolate cup sat inside.

The cup Noah loved.

The cup Celeste prepared for him every night before bed.

I zoomed in on the pictures Mara secretly took before handing it to me.

Tiny black fragments.

Almost impossible to see.

Almost.

I opened my laptop and started searching.

At first, I thought I was losing my mind.

Maybe the doctors were right.

Maybe grief and fear had made me desperate for an explanation.

Then I found something.

A chemical report from a laboratory forum.

Certain insect-like fragments found in food containers could come from contaminated supplements or illegal substances designed to create physical reactions.

My hands froze.

Illegal substances.

Someone had been putting something into my son's food.

Someone who had access to my house.

Someone who knew his routines.

Someone who knew exactly how to make him suffer while making everyone believe he was unstable.

My phone vibrated.

A message from Mara.

“Mr. Vale, I remembered something else.”

I called immediately.

She answered after one ring.

“Daniel…”

Her voice was shaking.

“What happened?”

“I saw Celeste putting something into Noah’s chocolate cup three nights before the hospital.”

The room went silent.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because I wasn’t sure,” she whispered. “And because she scared me.”

I stood up.

“What do you mean?”

Mara hesitated.

“Two days ago, she found me watching the kitchen camera footage.”

My heart tightened.

“You watched the cameras?”

“Yes. I thought something was wrong. Noah kept saying he was scared of the chocolate.”

I closed my eyes.

Noah knew.

My son knew something was wrong.

And everyone ignored him.

“What did Celeste say when she found you?”

Mara lowered her voice.

“She smiled.”

A cold feeling moved through my body.

“She told me…”

“She said, ‘Smart girls know when to stay quiet.’”

I gripped my phone.

That wasn't a warning.

That was a threat.

The next morning, I changed my plan.

I didn't confront Celeste.

Not yet.

Anger was what she expected.

She wanted me emotional.

She wanted me reckless.

So I did the one thing she never expected.

I acted normal.

At breakfast, Celeste smiled across the table.

“How’s Noah feeling?”

I looked at her.

The woman I married.

The woman who slept beside me.

The woman who might have been hurting my child.

“He’s better,” I said.

She smiled.

Relief crossed her face.

Too much relief.

Then she reached for Noah’s cup.

I moved faster.

“No.”

Her hand stopped.

For one second…

Her eyes changed.

Not sadness.

Not concern.

Fear.

And that was when I knew.

I wasn't chasing a suspicion anymore.

May you like

I was chasing the truth.

And Celeste had just shown me where to look.
