Chapter 1 - “DADDY, DON’T LET HER TAKE IT”

“Daddy…”

The sound of my daughter’s voice was barely a whisper.

But I heard the fear behind it.

I was standing across the room, holding a glass of water, when I saw six-year-old Mireya grab her chest and stumble backward.

Her face had gone pale.

Her tiny fingers searched desperately through her pocket.

Looking for one thing.

Her inhaler.

“Mireya?”

I dropped everything and rushed toward her.

“What’s wrong, sweetheart?”

She looked at me with tears filling her eyes.

“I can’t breathe…”

My heart stopped.

I knew that look.

I had seen it before.

The panic.

The fear.

The desperate search for air.

Her asthma attacks had always terrified me because I knew how quickly a child could go from okay to fighting for every breath.

“Where’s your inhaler?” I asked.

Mireya pointed toward the table.

But before she could reach it, Tove moved.

Fast.

Too fast.

My wife’s hand grabbed the inhaler before my daughter could touch it.

“Mireya doesn’t need this every time she gets nervous,” Tove said calmly.

I froze.

“What are you doing?”

Tove looked at me.

Almost annoyed.

“I’m teaching her not to depend on it.”

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“She’s having trouble breathing.”

“She’s exaggerating.”

Those words hit me harder than anything else.

Because they didn’t come from a stranger.

They came from the woman who was supposed to protect my child.

“Mireya,” I said softly, “come here.”

But my daughter never looked at me.

She was staring at Tove.

Terrified.

“Please…”

Her voice cracked.

“Please give it back.”

For a second, nobody moved.

The room was filled with people.

Friends.

Family.

Neighbors.

Everyone watching.

Everyone waiting.

Then Tove did something I still struggle to understand.

She threw the inhaler.

Across the room.

The small device hit the wall.

Dropped onto the floor.

And slid underneath a heavy cabinet.

A wave of shock went through the room.

“What did you just do?” I whispered.

Tove crossed her arms.

“She needs to learn.”

But Mireya wasn’t listening anymore.

She was trying to crawl.

Trying to reach the only thing that could help her.

Her breathing became louder.

Her tiny body shook.

“Daddy…”

That one word broke something inside me.

I pushed through everyone standing there.

“Mireya!”

I dropped to my knees.

Her hands were trembling against the carpet.

“I’m here. I’m here.”

But then her body gave out.

Her knees collapsed.

And she fell forward.

The entire room went silent.

Except for the sound of my daughter struggling to breathe.

I looked up at Tove.

And for the first time in our marriage…

I didn’t recognize the woman standing in front of me.

I grabbed the cabinet and pulled with everything I had.

My fingers found the inhaler.

I helped Mireya use it.

Seconds passed.

Then slowly…

Her breathing started to return.

But she didn’t let go of me.

She wrapped her arms around my neck.

Like she was afraid I would disappear.

And then she whispered something into my ear.

Something that made my blood run cold.

“Daddy…”

“She does this when you’re not home.”

I stopped moving.

“What?”

Mireya looked toward Tove.

Her voice shaking.

“She doesn’t want me to tell you.”

And suddenly, the room felt much colder.

May you like

Because I realized…

This wasn’t the first time my daughter had been afraid of my wife.
