Chapter 7 - EMILY’S LETTER

Sophie’s trust was worth twelve million dollars.

Emily’s parents had created it after Sophie was born.

Adrian had barely thought about it because the money could not be touched until Sophie turned twenty-one.

Unless specific emergency conditions were met.

One of those conditions involved the death or incapacity of Sophie’s legal guardian.

Adrian.

Daniel explained it carefully.

“If you became legally incapacitated, a court-approved guardian could request access for Sophie’s care.”

Adrian stared at him.

“And Vanessa planned to become that guardian.”

“That’s what it looks like.”

“She was trying to make me look unstable.”

“Yes.”

Adrian leaned back.

Everything aligned.

The foundation authorization.

The insurance beneficiary change.

The child-services complaint.

Vanessa wasn’t just cruel.

She had been building a case.

Then Daniel placed another folder on the table.

“There’s something else.”

Adrian almost laughed.

“Of course there is.”

“This was found in Emily’s estate archive.”

He froze.

“Emily?”

“Your old attorney digitized everything last year. I searched for anything mentioning guardianship.”

Daniel handed him an envelope.

His name was written on it.

Emily’s handwriting.

Adrian forgot how to breathe.

“When was this written?”

“Two weeks before she died.”

His hands shook as he opened it.

Adrian,

If you are reading this because someone new has entered your life, I need you to remember something. Loving again is not betrayal. Sophie needs to see you happy.

Adrian swallowed hard.

He kept reading.

But please never let anyone make our daughter feel like loving me means betraying them. Never let anyone erase me to make themselves feel bigger. Sophie should never be forced to choose between the dead and the living.

Adrian covered his mouth.

Daniel looked away.

The final paragraph nearly broke him.

And if someone ever tells Sophie she needs a “new mother,” tell her what I told her every night: nobody replaces love. We only make room for more of it.

Adrian closed his eyes.

For years, he had avoided reading Emily’s final letters.

He thought it would destroy him.

Instead, the words made everything clear.

That evening, he took Sophie to the cemetery.

No Vanessa.

No cameras.

No arguments.

Just father and daughter.

Sophie placed fresh lilies on the grave.

Adrian knelt beside her.

“I found a letter from Mom.”

Sophie looked at him.

“For me?”

“Partly.”

“What did she say?”

Adrian smiled through tears.

“She said nobody can replace love.”

Sophie stared at the headstone.

Then she whispered, “I knew she’d say something like that.”

They sat quietly.

Until Sophie noticed something.

A white envelope tucked behind the gravestone.

“Daddy?”

Adrian frowned.

He pulled it out.

His name was written across the front.

Not Emily’s handwriting.

Vanessa’s.

Inside was a single printed photograph.

Adrian stared at it.

It showed him asleep in his bed.

Sophie beside him.

May you like

And a handwritten message underneath:

You have no idea how close I got.
