Chapter 14 - THE VIDEO

The video spread in less than an hour.

News vans appeared outside Adrian’s house.

Headlines exploded online.

BILLIONAIRE EXECUTIVE THREATENS FIANCÉE

VANESSA COLE CLAIMS YEARS OF ABUSE

The footage looked terrible.

Adrian appeared furious.

His voice said:

“I swear to God, Vanessa, if you touch Sophie again, I’ll kill you.”

The clip ended.

No context.

No timestamp.

No surrounding conversation.

Adrian watched it once.

Then looked at Marcus.

“Fake?”

“Edited.”

“How sure?”

“One hundred percent.”

The sentence had been stitched together from three separate recordings.

“I swear to God” from one argument.

“If you touch Sophie again” from a later conversation.

“I’ll kill you” from a movie Adrian had jokingly quoted during a recorded dinner.

Daniel stared at Marcus.

“Can you prove it?”

“Easily.”

“But the internet won’t wait for proof.”

Adrian looked toward the stairs.

Sophie had already seen one headline on a tablet.

That was enough.

She came downstairs holding the device.

“Daddy?”

Adrian crouched.

“It’s fake.”

“I know.”

“You do?”

Sophie nodded.

“You don’t talk like that.”

Adrian nearly broke.

He hugged her.

“I’m sorry you have to see this.”

“She wants people to hate you.”

“Yes.”

“Like she wanted me to hate Mom?”

Adrian pulled back and looked at her.

“Yes.”

Sophie thought for a second.

“Then don’t let her.”

That sentence changed everything.

Adrian had spent days reacting.

Defending.

Protecting.

Running from one lie to another.

No more.

That afternoon, he held a press conference.

No dramatic speech.

No shouting.

He simply released the unedited security footage.

Vanessa locking Sophie in the closet.

Vanessa stealing Emily’s necklace.

The digital forensic report proving the threatening video was fabricated.

The forged financial authorization.

The fake psychiatric documents.

Then Adrian stepped to the microphone.

“My daughter’s pain will not become entertainment, so I will not discuss private details beyond what is necessary.”

He paused.

“But I will say this.”

The room went silent.

“Grief made me vulnerable. That is not the same as being weak.”

Another pause.

“And loving someone does not give them permission to erase the people we loved before them.”

Reporters stopped shouting.

For once, they listened.

By evening, public opinion had completely shifted.

Vanessa’s attorney withdrew from several claims.

The prosecutor expanded the charges.

Fraud.

Forgery.

Identity theft.

Burglary.

Child endangerment.

Witness intimidation.

And more.

That night, Sophie sat beside Adrian on the couch.

“Is it over?”

He wanted to say yes.

Then his phone rang.

Detective Bell.

“We have a problem.”

Adrian closed his eyes.

“What now?”

“Vanessa posted bail.”

Adrian stood.

“How?”

“Someone paid it.”

“Who?”

“We’re finding out.”

“Where is she?”

There was a pause.

“We don’t know.”

May you like

Adrian looked at Sophie.

And then the lights in the house went out.
