Chapter 2: The Secret Beneath the House

Arthur stood at the top of the basement stairs, unable to move.
The darkness below seemed alive.
Every instinct in his body told him to leave, but the thought of Sarah and his children trapped somewhere down there pushed him forward.
“Leo? Maya?” he called again.
His voice echoed through the basement.
No answer.
Only the sound of something shifting in the darkness.
Arthur slowly descended.
The old wooden steps creaked beneath his weight. The flickering light above him struggled to stay on, casting strange shadows across the walls.
Then he saw it.
A small red toy car lying on the basement floor.
Leo’s favorite toy.
Arthur’s breathing stopped.
Why was his son’s toy down here?
He moved deeper into the basement and noticed something he had never seen before.
A wooden door hidden behind a stack of old boxes.
A door that didn’t belong.
Arthur walked closer.
His hands trembled as he touched the handle.
Locked.
Behind the door, he heard a faint sound.
A child crying.
“Leo?”
Arthur grabbed a metal tool from the floor and forced the lock open.
The door swung inward.
And his entire world collapsed.
Inside the hidden room were photographs.
Hundreds of them.
Pictures of his family.
Pictures of him.
Pictures of Sarah.
But some of them had been taken without his knowledge.
Sarah watching him sleep.
Sarah standing outside his office.
Sarah following his children from a distance.
Arthur stepped back in horror.
“What is this?”
Then he noticed something on the table.
A folder with his name written across it.
Inside were documents.
Medical records.
Psychological evaluations.
And one photo that made his blood run cold.
A picture of Sarah standing beside another woman who looked exactly like her.
The same face.
The same eyes.
The same smile.
But the woman in the picture was not his wife.
A sound behind him made Arthur freeze.
The basement door slowly closed.
He turned around.
Sarah was standing there.
Calm.
Silent.
Watching him.
May you like
“Arthur,” she said softly.
“You weren’t supposed to find this.”
