Chapter 13 - THE TRUTH THAT SURVIVED THE FIRE

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Because the person standing above them was someone who should not have been there.

Someone whose name was never mentioned.

Someone everyone believed had disappeared forever.

Ronan stared upward.

His voice was barely a whisper.

“Father?”

The man standing on the rooftop looked down.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

Richard Callahan.

The man who was supposed to be dead for fourteen years.

Tessa felt the world spinning.

Another impossible truth.

Another ghost from the past.

“You’re alive?”

Richard smiled sadly.

“Yes, Ronan.”

The anger came instantly.

Ronan raised his weapon.

“You watched me believe you were dead.”

“I had no choice.”

“No choice?”

Ronan’s voice exploded.

“You let me bury you.”

“You let me hate myself.”

Richard looked away.

“And I let your mother die.”

The words silenced everyone.

Tessa stared.

“What does that mean?”

Richard slowly walked down from the rooftop.

“I didn’t kill Elena.”

Ronan’s eyes narrowed.

“Then why disappear?”

“Because the person who killed her wanted me blamed.”

“Who?”

Richard looked around.

At Damian.

At Arthur.

At Eda.

Then finally at Tessa.

“The person who has controlled everything from the beginning.”

A cold silence filled the alley.

Ronan stepped closer.

“Say the name.”

Richard closed his eyes.

“The person who caused your mother’s death…”

A pause.

“Was your uncle.”

Nobody spoke.

For fourteen years, Ronan believed the enemy was outside his family.

A rival company.

A criminal organization.

A stranger.

But the truth was worse.

The enemy had shared his family dinners.

Celebrated his birthdays.

Called him nephew.

Damian looked shocked.

“My father?”

Richard nodded.

“Your father’s brother.”

Ronan’s face hardened.

“Victor.”

Tessa looked at him.

“Chef Voss?”

Richard nodded.

“He wasn’t just your mother’s accountant.”

“He was her brother.”

The pieces started falling into place.

The recipe.

The notebook.

The hidden message.

The lies.

Victor Voss wasn’t just connected to the mystery.

He was at the center of it.

“He wanted control of everything,” Richard continued.

“Elena found out he was stealing from the company. She threatened to expose him.”

Ronan clenched his fists.

“So he killed her.”

“No.”

Richard looked at him.

“He hired someone.”

Everyone became silent.

“Who?”

Richard looked toward Damian.

“Your father.”

Damian stepped back.

“My father?”

“He believed Elena would destroy the family name.”

Richard’s voice broke.

“He convinced himself he was protecting the family.”

Ronan laughed bitterly.

“Protecting?”

His eyes filled with rage.

“He murdered my mother.”

“Yes.”

A painful silence.

Then Tessa spoke.

“Why did Eda hide the recipe?”

Everyone looked at her.

Eda stepped forward.

“Because Elena knew Victor would come after anyone who had the evidence.”

“What evidence?”

Eda looked at the notebook.

“The recipe wasn’t the secret.”

She touched the cover.

“The recipe was the hiding place.”

She opened the notebook.

Inside the back cover was a thin piece of metal.

A hidden storage chip.

Tessa stared.

“What is that?”

“Everything Elena discovered.”

Ronan took it.

For the first time in fourteen years…

he had proof.

But before anyone could celebrate…

A phone rang.

Damian looked down.

His face changed.

“What?”

A voice came through.

Everyone heard it.

“Damian.”

The voice was calm.

Cold.

Victor Voss.

Damian froze.

“You failed.”

“Uncle…”

“No excuses.”

A pause.

“Bring me the chip.”

Damian looked at Ronan.

“No.”

The voice became darker.

“Then you die with the rest of them.”

The call ended.

Everyone understood.

Victor was still moving.

Still controlling.

Still dangerous.

And now he knew they had the evidence.

Ronan looked at everyone.

“We go to Beaumont House.”

Tessa frowned.

“Why?”

“Because that’s where this started.”

May you like

He looked at the old restaurant in the distance.

“And that’s where it ends.”
