Chapter 2 - THE SCENT THEY COULDN'T NAME

Nobody slept that night.

The ceremonial hall became a war room.

Damian's council demanded explanations.

Aurelia's guards controlled every entrance.

Serena disappeared upstairs with two attendants.

And I sat in Damian's private study with the mother I had not seen since I was nine years old.

Aurelia placed my pendant on the desk.

“You activated the distress seal.”

“I didn't know what else to do.”

“You remembered.”

“Barely.”

She looked at me carefully.

“I taught you when you were a child.”

“You taught me a lot of things before you disappeared.”

Pain crossed her face.

“Elara—”

“Don't.”

She stopped.

I stood.

“I spent seventeen years believing you abandoned me.”

“I know.”

“You knew where I was?”

“Yes.”

The answer hurt more than I expected.

I laughed once.

“You could have lied.”

“I've allowed enough lies.”

“Then tell me why.”

Aurelia looked toward the window.

“Because someone tried to kill you.”

My anger disappeared.

“What?”

“You were nine.”

She pulled a chair out.

This time I sat.

“Our family had enemies.”

“Damian?”

“No.”

She hesitated.

“At least, not then.”

I stared at her.

Aurelia continued.

“The Vale line carries something rare.”

“A scent?”

“More than scent.”

She leaned forward.

“Most wolves recognize one another through scent immediately.”

I nodded.

“Yours doesn't work that way.”

“Everyone says I have none.”

“They're wrong.”

She touched the pendant.

“Your scent is sealed.”

I stared at her.

“Sealed by who?”

“Me.”

The room went silent.

I stood so quickly the chair scraped backward.

“You did this to me?”

“To keep you alive.”

“You made me defective.”

“No.”

“You made everyone think I was.”

“I made predators unable to find you.”

Her voice finally cracked.

“There's a difference.”

I stopped.

Aurelia looked older suddenly.

Not weak.

Just tired.

“The First Moon bloodline produces a scent capable of affecting territorial bonds.”

“What does that mean?”

“It means wolves recognize your authority before they understand why.”

I remembered the hall.

Everyone lowering their heads.

Even Damian.

“That was me?”

“Yes.”

“Why now?”

“Because the seal is breaking.”

I looked at the pendant.

“Because I activated it?”

“Partly.”

She paused.

“And because Damian publicly rejected you.”

I almost laughed.

“Apparently humiliation has benefits.”

Aurelia didn't smile.

“He may have triggered something he doesn't understand.”

A knock interrupted us.

One of her guards entered.

“Lady Vale.”

“What?”

“We found someone near the eastern service road.”

Damian appeared behind him.

His expression was furious.

“My men found him.”

Aurelia ignored the correction.

“Who?”

The guard looked at me.

“He was carrying photographs of Miss Vale.”

My stomach tightened.

“What kind of photographs?”

“Years of them.”

Damian stepped into the room.

“Someone has been watching you.”

Aurelia stood.

“How long?”

The guard placed a folder on the desk.

I opened it.

The first photograph showed me outside the Cross territory library three years earlier.

The second showed me beside the river.

The third showed Damian kissing my forehead at a summer festival.

The fourth showed me sleeping beside a tree.

Then I reached the last photograph.

My hands stopped.

It had been taken that evening.

I was standing in the ceremonial hall.

Damian was removing my pendant.

Written across the bottom were five words.

SHE HAS FINALLY BEEN REJECTED.

Damian read them over my shoulder.

His face changed.

Aurelia reached for the photograph.

“Where is the man?”

“Detained downstairs.”

“Bring him.”

The guard hesitated.

“There is something else.”

“What?”

“He had this.”

He placed a small metal object on the desk.

A Cross territory security badge.

Damian picked it up.

“This belongs to my inner guard.”

Aurelia looked at him.

“So whoever has been watching my daughter wasn't outside your territory.”

Her gaze hardened.

May you like

“They were inside your house.”

And suddenly, my rejection no longer felt like the worst thing that had happened that night.
