Chapter 1 - THE WOMAN AT THE DOOR

Damian slowly turned toward me.
For the first time in six years, the Alpha who had made me feel worthless looked afraid.
My mother remained at the entrance to the ceremonial hall.
No one dared move.
The applause that had celebrated Serena only moments earlier had disappeared so completely that I could hear the chandeliers trembling above us.
Damian recovered first.
“This is Cross territory.”
His voice was controlled again.
“You entered without permission.”
My mother stepped forward.
“And yet your guards opened the gates.”
“They were ordered to stand down.”
“No.”
She stopped beneath the first chandelier.
“They recognized my crest.”
Damian's jaw tightened.
Serena looked between us.
“What crest?”
My mother ignored her.
She looked directly at me.
“Come here, Elara.”
My name sounded different in her voice.
Not softer.
Older.
Almost ceremonial.
Damian's eyes snapped toward me.
“Elara, don't.”
I stared at him.
Six years.
Six years of waiting for him to acknowledge me.
Six years of believing every excuse.
Not yet.
The council isn't ready.
You need more training.
People won't understand your lack of scent.
Give me time.
I had given him everything except the one thing he had never deserved.
The truth about me.
I stepped away from the platform.
Damian caught my wrist.
My mother's guards moved instantly.
Weapons shifted.
Growls rolled through the room.
Damian froze.
I looked down at his hand.
“Let go.”
“Elara, we need to talk.”
“You had six years.”
His grip loosened.
I pulled free.
Serena laughed nervously.
“This is ridiculous.”
Everyone turned toward her.
She lifted her chin.
“I am the Luna of this territory now.”
My mother finally looked at her.
“No.”
Serena's smile vanished.
“The bond necklace—”
“Is ceremonial jewelry.”
My mother's gaze dropped to the ruby necklace around Serena's throat.
“A necklace doesn't make a Luna.”
Damian stepped down from the platform.
“Enough.”
My mother faced him.
“I agree.”
She removed one black glove.
A silver mark covered the inside of her wrist.
It was the same symbol engraved on my pendant.
Several older council members gasped.
Councilman Orson staggered backward.
“No.”
My mother noticed him.
Recognition flashed across her face.
“Interesting.”
Orson went pale.
Damian looked at him.
“You know her?”
Orson said nothing.
My mother answered instead.
“My name is Aurelia Vale.”
The room changed.
Not loudly.
Not dramatically.
But everyone old enough to understand territory history suddenly knew exactly who stood among them.
Damian stared at her.
“The Vale bloodline disappeared.”
“Did we?”
Aurelia smiled without warmth.
“Then perhaps someone should explain the vehicles surrounding your estate.”
Whispers spread.
I had heard the Vale name only in fragments growing up.
An ancient northern bloodline.
Guardians of the mountain territories.
A family supposedly destroyed during the border wars.
Damian looked at me again.
“You're a Vale?”
Before I could answer, my mother did.
“She is not merely a Vale.”
Aurelia walked toward me.
She stopped only inches away.
For years I had imagined this reunion.
I had imagined anger.
Tears.
Accusations.
Instead, neither of us seemed capable of moving.
Then she reached for my hand.
Her fingers closed around mine.
“Elara Vale is my only daughter.”
A murmur swept through the hall.
Damian's face hardened.
Serena stared at me as if my skin had changed.
Aurelia turned toward the assembled pack.
“And she is the last direct female heir of the First Moon line.”
Someone dropped a glass.
It shattered across the floor.
Damian whispered one word.
“Impossible.”
Aurelia's expression became colder.
“You've been saying that about my daughter for years.”
Then something strange happened.
The ruby necklace around Serena's throat cracked.
A thin line appeared through the center stone.
Serena grabbed it.
“What happened?”
My pendant became warm in my palm.
Then every wolf in the room lowered its head.
Including Damian's.
I stared around the hall.
“What are they doing?”
My mother looked at me.
“They're not choosing to kneel.”
My heart stopped.
“Then why are they?”
Aurelia's eyes held mine.
May you like
“Because your blood just woke up.”
And from somewhere deep beneath Cross territory, a wolf answered with a howl that had not been heard in more than twenty years.
