Chapter 3: The Secret That Built an Empire

"No one touches my brother."
Liam's voice echoed across the sidewalk.
Even he couldn't believe the words had come out of his mouth.
Brother.
The word hung in the air.
Edward's expression hardened.
"You have no idea what you're protecting."
"I know enough," Liam replied. "You're afraid of him."
Victoria broke down completely.
"It was my fault..."
Both boys turned toward her.
Eight years earlier, Victoria had given birth to identical twins.
The Ashford family had been on the verge of financial collapse.
Edward's lawyers had warned him that dividing the inheritance between two heirs would split the controlling shares of the family's multibillion-dollar trust.
So he made a decision.
One child would remain an Ashford.
The other would disappear forever.
A corrupt doctor accepted millions to falsify medical records.
Victoria, exhausted after childbirth, was told one twin had died during the night.
She had mourned him every day since.
Noah clenched his fists.
"I remember the orphanage."
His voice remained calm.
"I remember asking every family if they were looking for me."
Victoria collapsed into tears.
"I'm so sorry."
"I waited."
Noah looked directly into her eyes.
"Every birthday."
"I waited."
Edward struck his cane against the sidewalk.
"Enough."
"You survived because I allowed it."
Liam looked at his grandfather with horror.
"You abandoned your own grandson."
"I protected this family."
"No," Liam answered.
"You protected your fortune."
Just then, several black SUVs surrounded the block.
But they didn't belong to Edward.
They belonged to the Manhattan Police Department's Financial Crimes Division.
An older detective stepped out holding a thick evidence file.
"Edward Ashford," he announced.
"We have warrants for fraud, conspiracy, child trafficking, falsified medical records, and obstruction of justice."
Edward's confident smile disappeared.
