Chapter 9 - THE MAN WHO SIGNED THE LIE

The bomb technician disabled the device with three minutes remaining.

Maria survived.

But by sunrise, Lucas was in handcuffs.

Captain Cole had submitted evidence claiming Lucas ordered Daniel’s death to gain control of Bennett Development.

There were emails from Lucas’s account.

Bank transfers bearing his authorization.

A recorded argument in which Lucas shouted, “If Daniel won’t step aside, remove him.”

The final sentence had been taken from a conversation about removing Daniel from a project.

But it sounded like a murder order.

Lucas’s attorney, Charles Whitmore, met him in an interrogation room.

“I can get you released, but you must surrender temporary control of the company.”

“To whom?”

“Vanessa Mercer.”

Lucas laughed bitterly.

“So you work for her too.”

Charles lowered his voice.

“Sign the papers.”

“No.”

“They have enough to hold you.”

“You helped create those documents.”

Charles’s eyes shifted toward the camera.

Lucas understood.

Charles was frightened.

“Who threatened you?”

“My family is none of your concern.”

“They have someone you love.”

Charles stood.

“Sign by noon, or Lily goes into state custody.”

Lucas leaned forward.

“Rachel left evidence in a safe-deposit box.”

Charles stopped at the door.

The color drained from his face.

“What box?”

Lucas had his answer.

Charles knew about it.

Detective Grant arranged Lucas’s release after proving several emails had been altered.

The murder charge remained active, but Lucas was free under supervision.

They went directly to First National Bank.

The brass key opened Box 417.

Inside were ledgers, photographs, a sealed vial, and a voice recorder.

Lucas pressed play.

Daniel’s voice filled the small room.

“If you’re hearing this, Diane Mercer knows I found the offshore accounts. Vanessa accessed my car yesterday. I told Lucas I was delaying the project, but I didn’t tell him why. I was trying to protect him.”

Lucas closed his eyes.

His brother had not blamed him.

Daniel continued.

“Charles Whitmore prepared the false contracts. Captain Cole buried the theft reports. Rachel has copies. If anything happens to us, trust Maria Alvarez.”

The recording ended with a knock.

Then Vanessa’s voice said:

“Daniel, we need to talk.”

Grant took possession of the evidence.

The vial was sent for analysis.

It contained the drug used to kill Rachel.

Lucas called the secure house.

No one answered.

He called again.

A federal supervisor finally picked up.

“Lily and the agent protecting her are missing.”

Lucas felt ice move through his veins.

Security footage showed Charles Whitmore entering with a valid court order.

He drove away with Lily eleven minutes later.

Maria stared at Lucas.

“Charles isn’t taking her to Vanessa.”

“How do you know?”

“Because Charles has spent three years protecting someone even more dangerous.”

“Who?”

Maria looked down at Daniel’s ledger.

Then she pointed to a name that appeared above every payment made to Diane, Vanessa, and Cole.

EDWARD BENNETT.

Lucas’s father.
