Chapter 14 - RACHEL’S FINAL GIFT

Vanessa fired.
Grant turned at the last second.
The bullet tore through his upper arm.
He fell, pulling Lily down behind the car.
Lucas rushed Vanessa.
She fired again.
The shot missed him and shattered a headlight.
He struck her wrist.
The gun slid across the road.
Vanessa clawed at his face.
“You took my life!”
“You never had my life.”
“Rachel had everything!”
“She treated you like family.”
“She pitied me!”
Vanessa drove her knee into Lucas’s ribs and reached for the gun.
Lily kicked it over the bridge.
Vanessa stared at her.
The hatred in her face was no longer hidden.
“You ruined everything, just like your mother.”
She lunged at Lily.
Lucas caught Vanessa around the waist.
They fell onto the pavement.
Police vehicles appeared at the far end of the road.
Vanessa stopped fighting.
Then she began laughing.
“They’ll never prove Rachel’s murder.”
“They already did,” Grant said, pressing one hand over his wound. “We have the vial, the recording, your confession, and Maria’s testimony.”
“Maria is dying.”
A paramedic’s voice came over Grant’s radio.
Maria had survived surgery.
Vanessa’s laughter stopped.
Officers placed her in handcuffs.
As they pulled her away, Lily stepped forward.
“My mom wasn’t weak.”
Vanessa looked back.
Lily held her gaze.
“She trusted people because she was good. You hurt people because you’re empty.”
Vanessa had no answer.
Three weeks later, Captain Cole was captured at the border.
Charles Whitmore agreed to testify in exchange for protection for his family.
Diane Mercer faced charges for kidnapping, conspiracy, attempted murder, and financial fraud.
Vanessa was charged with the murders of Rachel and Daniel, along with kidnapping, extortion, and attempted murder.
Edward’s body was recovered from the rocks below the bridge.
Bennett Development returned every stolen dollar investigators could trace.
Lucas sold the mountain estate and used the money to establish a legal fund for families threatened into silence by powerful people.
But healing did not come as quickly as justice.
Lily suffered nightmares.
She blamed herself for Rachel’s death.
One evening, Lucas found her sitting on the bathroom floor with Rachel’s letter in her lap.
“If I hadn’t made the tea, Mom would still be alive.”
Lucas sat beside her.
“You made tea because someone you trusted lied to you.”
“But I carried the cup.”
“And your mother drank it because it came from the person she loved most.”
Lily began to cry.
Lucas held her.
“You did not take her away. You gave her comfort in her last moments.”
Lily unfolded the final page of Rachel’s letter.
Neither of them had noticed that two sheets were stuck together.
A short message was written inside.
Lily, if you ever read this, remember that no lie can change who you are. You are the best thing I ever gave your father.
Beneath the message was a hand-drawn map.
It pointed to an old oak tree behind the mansion.

At the bottom, Rachel had written:
Our real story is buried where Lucas first asked me to stay.
