Chapter 3 — The Woman In The Shadows

The video played silently.
The mansion hallway appeared on the screen.
The timestamp showed:
2:13 A.M.
A woman slowly walked through the darkness.
Daniel leaned closer.
Lily stood beside him.
Margaret covered her mouth.
Because everyone recognized the woman.
But not for the reason they expected.
It wasn't Victoria.
It wasn't a stranger.
It was Emily Harper.
Daniel’s dead wife.
The room became completely silent.
"No..."
Daniel stepped backward.
His face lost all color.
"That’s impossible."
Emily had died two years ago.
A tragic car accident.
A funeral.
A goodbye.
Everything had been real.
Or so he thought.
The woman in the video had Emily’s hair.
Emily’s walk.
Emily’s necklace.
The necklace Daniel had given her on their anniversary.
Lily started crying.
"Mommy..."
Daniel immediately turned to her.
"Lily, listen to me."
But the little girl pointed at the screen.
"That's her."
Her voice shook.
"That's Mommy."
An investigation began immediately.
Daniel refused to let anyone control the truth anymore.
He hired private investigators.
They searched old records.
Medical reports.
Insurance documents.
Everything connected to Emily’s death.
And after days of digging…
They found something impossible.
Emily Harper had never died.
The woman who died in the accident had no confirmed identity.
The entire case had been manipulated.
Someone had created a false death.
Someone had hidden Emily away.
And Victoria knew.
When Daniel confronted Victoria again, she finally broke.
"I didn't plan this," Victoria whispered.
Daniel stared at her with disgust.
"Then tell me the truth."
Victoria looked down.
"Emily was alive when I married you."
The room went silent.
Daniel felt like the floor disappeared beneath him.
"Why?"
Victoria’s eyes filled with fear.
"Because someone wanted her gone."
"Who?"
Victoria hesitated.
Then she whispered:
"Your business partner."
Daniel froze.
His longtime partner.
The man who had helped him build his company.
The man he trusted like a brother.
Victoria continued.
"He discovered Emily found evidence of financial crimes inside the company."
Daniel clenched his fists.
"And you helped him."
Victoria started crying.
"I was scared."
"No."
Daniel shook his head.
"You were selfish."
That night, Daniel returned to the mansion.
But this time…
He wasn’t searching for a secret.
He was searching for his wife.
The woman everyone believed was gone.
The woman his daughters had been waiting for.
And hidden inside Emily’s old room, behind a loose wooden panel…
Daniel found a letter.
Written in Emily’s handwriting.

The first sentence destroyed him.
"Daniel, if you are reading this, it means I failed to come home."
