Chapter 2 — The Truth Behind the Locked Office

Daniel Harper stood frozen outside his office door.
For a man who had negotiated billion-dollar deals, defeated corporate rivals, and built an empire from nothing, he had never felt a fear like this.
Because this time, the threat was not outside his company.
It was inside his home.
Inside his family.
The office door was slightly open.
Daniel knew he had locked it before leaving for New York.
He always did.
Not because he didn’t trust his employees.
Because inside that room were the most private parts of his life.
Business contracts.
Family documents.
And memories of Emily.
His late wife.
Slowly, Daniel pushed the door open.
The room was exactly the same…
Except for one thing.
The small wooden box sitting on his desk was open.
His heart tightened.
That box had belonged to Emily.
She had kept letters, photographs, and personal notes inside it.
Things no one else was allowed to touch.
Daniel walked closer.
His fingers moved toward the box.
Inside, everything had been disturbed.
Someone had searched through it.
Someone had been looking for something.
Then he saw it.
A piece of paper lying beneath the photographs.
A document he had never seen before.
Daniel picked it up.
The first line made his entire body go cold.
"Legal confirmation of guardianship transfer — Emily Harper."
His breathing stopped.
"Emily?"
He whispered her name like she was still standing beside him.
Then another sound came from behind.
A quiet step.
Daniel turned.
Victoria stood in the doorway.
Perfectly dressed.
Perfectly calm.
As if she had been waiting for this moment.
"You're home early," she said with a soft smile.
But Daniel noticed something.
Her eyes immediately went to the document in his hand.
For the first time since he married her…
Victoria looked afraid.
"What is this?" Daniel asked.
His voice was controlled.
Too controlled.
Victoria slowly walked into the room.
"Daniel, you don't understand."
"Then explain."
A long silence filled the office.
"I was trying to protect this family."
Daniel stared at her.
"By sneaking into my office in the middle of the night?"
Victoria’s expression changed.
Only for a second.
But Daniel saw it.
The mask slipped.
"I didn't want the girls to find out."
Those words hit him harder than anything.
"The girls find out what?"
Victoria looked away.
And that was the answer.
Later that night, Daniel sat beside Lily’s bed.
The little girl was holding her blanket tightly.
For the first time in months, she felt safe.
"Dad..."
Daniel looked at her.
"Yes, sweetheart?"
"Are you angry at me?"
His expression broke.
"Why would I be angry?"
"Because I told Margaret about the woman."
Daniel reached out and held her hand.
"Lily, you did the right thing."
Her eyes filled with tears.
"I knew something was wrong."
Daniel looked at his daughter.
A child who had been carrying a secret because the adults around her refused to listen.
"You were right," he whispered.
"You were the only one paying attention."
The next morning, Daniel confronted Victoria.
But before she could explain, Margaret walked into the room holding something.
A small security camera.
"I found this hidden behind the bookshelf," Margaret said.
Daniel stared.
"How long has it been there?"
Margaret looked uncomfortable.
"Three months."
Daniel felt his anger rise.
Three months.
Someone had been watching his family.
Inside his own home.
They connected the camera footage to the system.
And what they saw destroyed the last piece of trust Daniel had left.

Because the woman entering his office at midnight…
Was not Victoria.
