Chapter 14 - THE LAST INNING
Midnight.
The old baseball field was covered in fog.
Luca entered alone.
He carried the trust documents in one hand.
No cane.
No wheelchair.
Each step hurt.
He kept walking.
Samuel Price stood near home plate.
Maya and Tommy were tied to chairs behind him.
Maya saw Luca.
"Dad!"
"I'm here."
Price smiled.
"Beautiful."
Luca stopped.
"Let them go."
"The documents."
"Children first."
"You don't negotiate."
"I just did."
Price raised his gun.
Luca tossed the folder onto the ground.
Price picked it up.
Opened it.
Then smiled.
"Finally."
Maya shouted.
"DAD!"
Luca dropped.
A bullet passed over his head.
Victor fired from the bleachers.
Chaos exploded.
Tommy knocked his chair sideways.
Maya did the same.
Price fired toward Victor.
Luca charged him.
His legs screamed.
But they held.
He slammed into Price.
The gun flew away.
Price punched Luca.
Luca fell.
Price kicked his damaged leg.
Pain exploded.
"You were supposed to stay in that chair!"
Luca grabbed his ankle.
Price fell.
Luca dragged himself on top of him.
Price laughed.
"You think this ends with me?"
Luca hit him.
"Yes."
Another punch.
"You destroyed my family."
Another.
"You poisoned me."
Another.
"You hunted my daughter."
Price smiled through blood.
"And your mother helped."
Luca stopped.
Price laughed.
"Your uncle helped."
Luca's fist tightened.
"Your doctor helped."
Luca raised his fist.
Then Maya screamed.
"Dad, stop!"
Luca froze.
She was watching him.
His daughter.
The girl who had looked at him without fear.
The girl who believed dead things didn't try.
Luca slowly lowered his fist.
Price smiled.
"Weak."
Luca stood.
"No."
Police sirens approached.
"I just remembered who's watching."
Price's smile disappeared.
Police arrested him.
Elena ran toward Maya.
Tommy was freed.
Victor approached Luca.
"It's over."
Luca looked at Price being pushed into a police car.
"No."
Victor frowned.
May you like
Luca looked toward Maya.
"Now we have to live with what comes after."
