Chapter 1 - THE MAN WHO STOLE TWELVE YEARS

The man who had poisoned Luca Costello was sitting at his dinner table.

Luca knew it before dessert arrived.

He just couldn't prove it yet.

Rain hammered the windows of the Costello estate while twelve men sat beneath the crystal chandelier pretending this was an ordinary family dinner.

It wasn't.

Nothing had been ordinary since Luca learned the truth.

For twelve years, doctors had told him a catastrophic stroke had destroyed the nerves controlling his legs.

For twelve years, he had accepted the wheelchair.

For twelve years, someone close to him had watched him suffer while knowing exactly why.

Now Luca sat at the head of the table and studied every face.

His uncle, Dominic Costello, drank red wine.

His cousin Adrian checked his phone.

Dr. Marcus Vale, the physician who had supervised Luca's care for nearly eleven years, quietly cut his steak.

Captain Victor Raines watched the room.

And Elena Harper stood near the doorway holding Maya's hand.

Luca had asked Elena to bring Maya downstairs for only a minute.

He needed everyone to see them together.

More importantly, he needed to see who reacted.

Maya walked toward him.

Her oversized sweater sleeves covered half her hands.

She leaned against Luca's wheelchair.

"Are these the scary people?"

Silence swallowed the room.

Tommy, standing behind her, whispered loudly.

"I think you're supposed to whisper that."

"I did whisper."

"You really didn't."

Luca almost smiled.

Dominic didn't.

His fork stopped halfway to his mouth.

Only for a second.

But Luca saw it.

Adrian saw something too.

His eyes moved from Maya to Elena.

Then to Luca.

"Who's the kid?"

Luca rested one hand on Maya's shoulder.

"Her name is Maya."

"I gathered that."

Adrian smiled.

"I'm asking why she's sitting at a Costello family dinner."

Maya frowned.

"I'm standing."

Tommy covered his mouth.

Luca looked directly at Adrian.

"She's my daughter."

The wineglass slipped from Dominic's fingers.

It struck the table.

Red wine spilled across the white cloth like blood.

Nobody moved.

Maya stared at the stain.

Tommy whispered, "That's dramatic."

Elena squeezed his shoulder.

"Not now."

Adrian slowly lowered his phone.

"Your what?"

"My daughter."

Dominic wiped wine from his hand.

"You've lost your mind."

"No."

Luca's voice remained calm.

"I found something I didn't know I had."

Dr. Vale had gone pale.

Luca noticed that too.

Adrian laughed once.

"This is ridiculous."

Luca looked at him.

"Why?"

"You expect us to believe some housekeeper suddenly shows up with your secret daughter twelve years later?"

Elena's face tightened.

Luca's expression changed.

The entire table noticed.

"Choose your next words carefully."

Adrian leaned back.

"I'm saying DNA tests can be manipulated."

"Three laboratories."

Adrian stopped smiling.

"Three?"

"Three independent laboratories."

Luca looked around the table.

"99.999 percent."

Maya leaned closer.

"Actually, it was 99.9997."

Luca looked at her.

"You remembered that?"

"I like numbers."

Tommy nodded solemnly.

"She's weird."

Maya elbowed him.

For half a second, the tension broke.

Then Dominic spoke.

"This changes nothing."

Luca turned toward him.

"Doesn't it?"

"No."

Dominic leaned forward.

"You've spent twelve years building a structure for succession."

"And?"

"And introducing some child nobody knew existed creates instability."

Luca watched him carefully.

"Interesting."

Dominic frowned.

"What?"

"I didn't mention succession."

Nobody spoke.

Dominic's jaw tightened.

Luca continued.

"But that was the first thing you thought about."

"Because somebody has to."

"Apparently."

Dominic pushed his chair back.

"I've had enough."

Luca's voice stopped him.

"Sit down."

Dominic stared at him.

The old Luca Costello had commanded Chicago while standing six feet two.

The new Luca had commanded it from a wheelchair.

The difference had never mattered.

Dominic sat.

Luca looked toward Elena.

"Take Maya upstairs."

Elena hesitated.

"It's okay."

Maya hugged Luca.

The gesture caught him completely unprepared.

"Good night."

His hand slowly touched her back.

"Good night."

Tommy followed.

Then Maya turned.

"Dad?"

The word hit Luca harder than any bullet ever had.

Everyone heard it.

Maya seemed to realize what she'd said.

Her face reddened.

"I mean..."

Luca couldn't speak for a second.

"It's okay."

She smiled.

Then disappeared through the doorway.

Luca turned back toward the table.

The warmth vanished from his face.

"Now we talk about something else."

Dr. Vale stopped cutting his steak.

Luca placed a folder on the table.

"The stroke I suffered twelve years ago never happened."

Silence.

Luca opened the folder.

"I was poisoned."

Dominic stared at him.

Adrian's face went blank.

Dr. Vale stopped breathing.

Luca watched all three.

"A neurotoxic compound was introduced into my system repeatedly over several months."

Dr. Vale recovered first.

"That's impossible."

Luca turned toward him.

"Why?"

"Because your original imaging clearly indicated—"

"I never told you what the new imaging showed."

Vale froze.

Luca leaned forward.

"You immediately assumed it contradicted the original imaging."

"I was your physician."

"Exactly."

Vale stood.

"I will not sit here and be accused—"

"Sit."

Vale didn't.

Two guards appeared behind him.

He sat.

Luca continued.

"The toxin didn't destroy my nerves."

Dominic looked at Luca's legs.

"It suppressed them."

Adrian stared.

Luca smiled without humor.

"Which means there's something else everyone here should understand."

He placed both hands on the table.

Then pushed.

His arms shook.

His shoulders strained.

For one impossible second, nothing happened.

Then Luca's right foot moved.

Dominic went white.

Adrian whispered, "Jesus Christ."

Luca lifted himself three inches from the wheelchair.

Pain tore through his body.

He dropped back down.

But nobody at the table cared that he had fallen.

They had seen him rise.

Luca looked directly at Dr. Vale.

"I'm coming back."

Vale's face told Luca everything.

Not guilt.

Fear.

Dinner ended ten minutes later.

At 11:43 p.m., Dr. Marcus Vale left the estate.

At 11:58, Luca received a call.

Victor entered the study while Luca was reviewing security footage.

"Boss."

Luca looked up.

Victor's face was grim.

"Vale never made it home."

Luca's eyes narrowed.

"What happened?"

"His car was found near the river."

"Body?"

"No."

Victor placed a phone on the desk.

"But we found this inside."

The screen displayed one unfinished text message.

Luca read it.

His blood turned cold.

I DID WHAT YOU ASKED.

HE KNOWS.

GET THE GIRL BEFORE HE—

The message ended there.

Luca was already reaching for his phone.

"Maya."

He called Elena.

No answer.

Again.

Nothing.

Luca wheeled toward the door.

"Lock down the estate."

Victor grabbed his radio.

Luca shouted.

May you like

"NOW!"

Then every light in the mansion went out.
