Chapter 14 - WHAT MONEY COULDN’T REPAIR

Marcus Vale was indicted on dozens of federal charges.
Fraud.
Money laundering.
Obstruction.
Witness intimidation.
Conspiracy.
The investigation lasted fourteen months.
Mercer Global survived.
Barely.
Elena sold several divisions.
She replaced half the board.
She voluntarily returned profits connected to contaminated acquisitions.
Her personal fortune dropped dramatically.
For the first time in years, Elena didn’t care.
Thomas moved into a small apartment in Brooklyn.
Elena offered him a penthouse.
He refused.
“I like being able to hear my neighbors argue.”
She laughed.
Every Sunday, they had breakfast.
At first, conversation was difficult.
Then it became easier.
Thomas told her stories about her childhood.
Elena told him about the years he missed.
Some conversations ended in laughter.
Others ended in tears.
Neither pretended twenty-five years could disappear.
Victoria was harder.
Elena couldn’t simply call her Mom.
So she called her Victoria.
And Victoria accepted it.
They met for coffee.
Then dinner.
Then Thanksgiving.
Trust returned in inches.
Not miles.
One evening, Thomas stood beside Elena on her penthouse balcony.
“You know what surprises me?”
“What?”
“You’re still angry.”
Elena smiled.
“Very.”
“Good.”
She looked at him.
“Good?”
“You spent your whole life thinking anger kept you alive.”
Thomas looked across Manhattan.
“But I think love did more of the work than you realized.”
May you like
Elena said nothing.
For once, she didn’t need an answer.
