Chapter 2: The Secret Behind the Gift

Two weeks later, Ethan sat inside his companyâs headquarters, staring at a photograph on his desk.
It was Margaret.
Not the woman everyone saw sleeping near the street.
The woman he saw.
A woman smiling while helping children at a local shelter.
His assistant, Daniel, walked into the office.
"Mr. Carter, I found information about Margaret Wilson."
Ethan looked up.
"What did you find?"
Daniel placed a folder on the desk.
"She was a nurse for thirty-five years."
Ethan opened the folder.
Inside were old photographs.
Margaret helping patients.
Holding newborn babies.
Comforting families.
Daniel continued.
"After her husband died, she lost everything because she used her savings to pay for his medical treatment."
Ethan became silent.
"She gave away everything she had?"
Daniel nodded.
"She saved his life for as long as she could. After that, she refused help from others because she said there were people who needed it more."
Ethan looked down.
The woman he thought he was helping had spent her entire life helping others.
Then Daniel revealed something else.
"Mr. Carter⊠there is one more thing."
"What?"
"Your father knew her."
Ethan froze.
"What did you say?"
Daniel opened another document.
"Twenty years ago, your father had a serious accident. Margaret was the nurse who stayed beside him during recovery."
Ethan stared at the papers.
A strange feeling filled his chest.
The woman on the street was not a stranger.
She had once helped the man who gave Ethan everything.
His fatherâs final words suddenly came back.
"The kindness you give to the world has a way of finding its way back to you."
That evening, Ethan returned to the same street.
But Margaret was gone.
He searched everywhere.
Until he found her sitting outside a small abandoned building.
She was dividing the money into envelopes.
Ethan approached.
"Margaret?"
The old woman looked surprised.
"Ethan? What are you doing here?"
He noticed the envelopes.
"What are those?"
She smiled.
"I saved some for food and medicine."
"And the rest?"
Margaret looked toward a nearby shelter.
"I want to help the children there."
Ethan couldn't believe it.
Even after receiving a life-changing amount of moneyâŠ
She was still thinking about others.
"Margaret," Ethan said quietly, "why?"
She smiled gently.
"Because someone once helped me when I had nothing."
"Who?"
She looked at him.
"Your father."
Ethanâs eyes filled with emotion.
For the first time in years, he understood something.

His father did not leave him a fortune.
He left him a lesson.
