Chapter 1: The Woman Who Returned a Fortune

The elderly woman stood frozen on the sidewalk, holding the package against her chest.

For a moment, she could not move.

The weight in her hands was not just money.

It was a test.

A test of honesty.

A test of character.

And somehow, she had passed.

The young man in the black suit watched her quietly. His name was Ethan Carter, the 23-year-old heir to one of the largest business families in the country.

To the world, Ethan was known as a billionaire’s son.

A man who had everything.

Luxury cars.

Private jets.

A future already written for him.

But nobody knew the reason he had stopped that day.

Nobody knew why he had chosen an old homeless woman instead of giving the money to a charity or handing it to someone powerful.

Because Ethan was searching for something money could never buy.

Trust.

Three years earlier, his father had passed away unexpectedly.

Before his death, his father left Ethan a strange message.

"When you become rich, remember one thing. Wealth does not reveal who you are. It reveals who others are when they think nobody is watching."

Ethan never forgot those words.

After inheriting the family fortune, he secretly began testing people around him.

Business partners.

Friends.

Even relatives.

Everyone smiled when they knew he was wealthy.

Everyone offered kindness when they wanted something.

But when he removed his title and hid his identity, their true faces appeared.

That was why he came to this street.

That was why he chose the woman everyone ignored.

Her name was Margaret Wilson.

A 72-year-old woman who had spent most of her life working as a cleaner.

After losing her husband and becoming unable to afford her apartment, she ended up sleeping on the streets.

Yet despite her suffering, she never stole.

She never begged aggressively.

She never blamed the world.

She simply survived with dignity.

When Ethan handed her the package, he already knew there was a chance she would return it.

But he needed to see it with his own eyes.

And she did exactly that.

"Sir," Margaret said, tears gathering in her eyes, "I don't understand. Why would you do this for someone like me?"

Ethan smiled.

"Because someone like you is exactly who deserves it."

Margaret shook her head.

"No one gives something this valuable without wanting something back."

Ethan looked at her seriously.

"You're right."

The woman became nervous.

"What do you want?"

Ethan pointed at the package.

"Nothing."

"Then why?"

He looked at the old woman standing in worn-out clothes, still more concerned about returning money than keeping it.

"Because today, I needed proof that good people still exist."

Margaret lowered her head as tears fell.

For years, people looked through her like she was invisible.

But this young man had seen her.

Not her poverty.

Her heart.

Before leaving, Ethan gave her one more thing.

A small card.

"If you ever need help, call this number."

Margaret looked at the card.

But she did not know the name printed on it.

Ethan Carter — CEO of Carter Global Holdings.
