Chapter 5 - The Fort Leonard Wood File

Dennis ordered the hospital floor sealed.
William ignored calls from his staff.
Reporters had already surrounded the building.
The canceled announcement had become national news.
The mystery boy.
The military ring.
The fleeing campaign manager.
Every network wanted answers.
William wanted only one.
“What happened at Fort Leonard Wood?”
Dennis closed the door to an empty consultation room.
“I was stationed there when you were a captain.”
William looked at him.
“You knew Mara?”
“Not well.”
“But you recognized her name.”
Dennis sat slowly.
His bad knee stiffened beneath him.
“I was working transport security at the hospital.”
“Mara arrived after an accident during a training exercise.”
William nodded.
“A vehicle rollover.”
Dennis stared at him.
“That was the official story.”
“What was the real one?”
“A chemical storage unit had been opened during an unauthorized nighttime operation.”
William’s expression sharpened.
“What kind of chemical?”
“I was never told.”
“Who authorized the operation?”
Dennis hesitated.
“General Harlan.”
William stood.
“No.”
“I saw his signature.”
“My father was overseas.”
“That was the story they gave you.”
Dennis opened an encrypted government database on a hospital computer.
He searched the archived incident number.
The file had been sealed.
A red banner appeared.
ACCESS RESTRICTED BY EXECUTIVE ORDER.
William stared at it.
“Whose executive order?”
Dennis scrolled down.
The order had been renewed twelve years earlier.
The authorization belonged to Senator William Harlan.
William stepped back.
“I never signed that.”
Dennis looked at him.
“Your digital signature is here.”
Eli stood near the door.
He had heard everything.
“You covered it up.”
“No.”
“Your name is on it.”
“I did not sign that order.”
Eli’s voice rose.
“My mother got sick after that base.”
William turned toward Dennis.
“Was Mara exposed?”
Dennis nodded reluctantly.
“She pulled two soldiers out of the storage building.”
“She saved their lives.”
“Then the command reported that she had violated protocol.”
Eli’s eyes filled with anger.
“They blamed her?”
Dennis said nothing.
That silence was enough.
William pressed both hands against the table.
“My father told me she had abandoned her duty.”
“He told me she was under investigation.”
“He made me believe contacting her would destroy her case.”
Dennis looked at him steadily.
“And you believed him.”
William’s shoulders fell.
“Yes.”
Eli turned away.
The door opened.
A federal agent entered.
Her dark hair was tied tightly behind her head.
She introduced herself as Special Agent Lena Brooks.
“We have located the ambulance.”
“Where?” William asked.
“Abandoned near the Missouri River.”
“And Mara?”
“Gone.”
“Rebecca?”
“Gone.”
“Vale?”
“Also gone.”
Lena placed a clear evidence bag on the table.
Inside was one of Mara’s letters.
It had been burned around the edges.
Only a few lines remained legible.
William read them aloud.
“William, your father knows about the baby.”
His voice stopped.
Eli looked at him.
The room became completely still.
William continued reading.
“He says if I contact you again, he will make sure our child disappears into the system.”
Eli’s face changed.
“Our child?”
William looked directly at him.
The dates raced through his mind.
The years did not make sense.
Eli was thirteen.
Mara’s letter was written more than twenty years earlier.
Then Lena placed a second item on the table.
A small hospital bracelet.
The faded name printed across it was still readable.
Baby Boy Ellison.
Eli whispered.
“That isn’t mine.”
William stared at the bracelet.
Somewhere between the military hospital and Mara’s lonely apartment, another child had vanished.

And William suddenly understood why she had waited so long to send Eli.
Eli was not the first son Mara had tried to protect.
