Chapter 12 - The Children on the List

Daniel explained everything.

The Fort Leonard Wood exposure had altered the health of dozens of soldiers.

Some developed heart disease.

Others suffered neurological damage.

A smaller group had children with unusual immune markers.

Harlan Strategic Systems secretly tracked those children for years.

Not to help them.

To study them.

Mara’s heart condition was linked to the exposure.

Daniel carried one of the rare immune markers.

So did Eli.

Robert Kessler had used military funding to support a private treatment program.

The treatment worked.

But the company planned to patent it.

Then charge desperate families more money than most could ever afford.

William listened from the doorway.

Daniel saw him.

“You heard everything.”

“Yes.”

“Then you know your family built this.”

William entered.

“My family did.”

“You own the company.”

“Not for much longer.”

Daniel laughed painfully.

“You think giving it away makes you innocent?”

“No.”

William pulled a chair beside the bed.

“It makes the treatment reachable.”

Daniel stared at him.

William continued.

“I will transfer every share into an independent medical trust.”

“The patents will become public.”

“The affected families will receive treatment without charge.”

Daniel’s anger weakened.

“You can’t do that without board approval.”

“I control forty-one percent of the voting shares.”

“Kessler controls the rest through shell companies.”

“Then I’ll expose him before the vote.”

Daniel studied William’s face.

“Rebecca kept records.”

“Where?”

“She called it insurance.”

“Did she tell you where it was?”

Daniel nodded.

“In a deposit box at Union Continental Bank.”

“Under what name?”

Daniel’s voice became quiet.

“Mara Harlan.”

William froze.

Rebecca had opened the box using the name Mara would have carried if William had married her.

Lena arranged a court order.

The bank manager led them into a private vault.

Inside the deposit box were three flash drives.

A stack of adoption records.

Photographs of children being followed.

Payment ledgers signed by Kessler’s aides.

And a sealed envelope addressed to Daniel.

Daniel opened it.

Rebecca’s handwriting covered four pages.

She admitted everything.

Charles had forced her to take the newborn boy.

He threatened to kill both mother and child.

Rebecca had planned to return Daniel once Charles lost interest.

But she became afraid.

Then attached.

Then selfish.

At the bottom of the letter, she had written:

I loved you enough to protect you.

But not enough to tell you the truth.

Daniel folded the letter.

His eyes were wet.

“I don’t know whether to hate her.”

Eli stood beside him.

“You don’t have to decide today.”

Lena examined one of the drives.

“Kessler scheduled an emergency board meeting tonight.”

William looked at the screen.

“He intends to sell the medical division.”

“To whom?” Dennis asked.

“A pharmaceutical company in Switzerland.”

“If the sale closes, the records disappear overseas.”

William reached for his coat.

“Then we stop the vote.”

Lena blocked him.

“Kessler has already issued a federal arrest request for you.”

“On what charge?”

“Theft of classified information.”

William gave a tired smile.

“Then I suppose I should make my arrest difficult to ignore.”

He called every television network that had waited for him the previous morning.

At exactly eight o’clock, Senator William Harlan walked onto the stage of the Harlan Strategic Systems boardroom.

Cameras were broadcasting live.

Federal agents waited at the doors.

Kessler sat at the head of the table.

Vale stood behind him disguised as security.

William placed the military ring in front of the microphones.

Then he said the sentence that stopped the vote.

May you like

“My father stole my son.”

“And everyone in this room helped him profit from it.”
