Chapter 4: The Last Thing They Expected

Ryan opened the door with shaking hands.

"Can I help you?"

One detective held up a badge.

"Ryan Matthews?"

"Yes."

"We're here regarding an ongoing investigation into financial fraud, embezzlement, and forgery."

Lorraine stepped forward.

"There must be some misunderstanding."

"There isn't."

Another investigator opened a briefcase.

"We have court-authorized warrants to seize financial records, electronic devices, and business documents."

Ryan turned toward me.

"You called them?"

"No."

"I simply stopped protecting you."

The lead investigator looked directly at Ryan.

"Mrs. Carter has been cooperating with this investigation for nearly six months."

Ryan's knees nearly gave out.

"You... planned all of this?"

"I prepared for the day I finally chose myself."

The investigators escorted both Ryan and Lorraine into the living room while officers photographed documents and collected computers.

Neither of them spoke.

For the first time since I'd known them, they had no control.

Hours later, after the last police vehicle disappeared down the street, my attorney arrived carrying one final envelope.

"The divorce petition has been filed," he said.

"And the court has frozen every account connected to Ryan and Lorraine pending the investigation."

I looked around the quiet house.

The same house where I'd spent years swallowing insults.

The same kitchen where Lorraine had torn my dress only yesterday.

I walked to the front door and gently closed it behind everyone.

Not with anger.

Not with revenge.

With peace.

As the afternoon sunlight filled the empty home, I realized something unexpected.

Lorraine hadn't destroyed my white dress.

She had torn away the last reason I had to keep living a life built on lies.

And losing them...

Was the first step toward finally finding myself again.
