Chapter 2: The Truth Behind The Locked Door

Daniel Callahan had imagined this day a thousand times.

He imagined Ellie walking down the aisle with a basket of white roses, her little smile filling the room. He imagined Vanessa waiting at the altar, promising to love not only him but the daughter who had been his entire world since the day her mother passed away.

But standing in that hallway, holding Ellie in his arms, none of those dreams mattered anymore.

Only one thing mattered.

His daughter was terrified.

Daniel slowly pulled Ellie away from his chest and looked into her eyes.

“Sweetheart… tell me exactly what happened.”

Ellie wiped her tears with the sleeve of her flower girl dress. Her small hands were still shaking.

“I was looking for you before the ceremony,” she whispered. “I wanted to give you this.”

She reached into her tiny flower basket and pulled out a folded piece of paper.

Daniel opened it carefully.

It was a drawing.

A picture of him, Ellie, and Vanessa standing together under a big yellow sun.

Above them, Ellie had written:

“My new family.”

Daniel felt his chest tighten.

“She saw it,” Ellie continued.

“Who saw it?”

“Vanessa.”

Daniel’s expression changed.

“She took the picture from me and said…”

Ellie stopped.

“Say it, sweetheart.”

The little girl looked down.

“She said when you marry her, things will be different. She said you won’t need me following you everywhere anymore.”

Daniel stared at his daughter.

Every word felt like a knife.

“What else did she say?”

Ellie swallowed hard.

“She said she waited years to have you. She said she didn’t want another girl taking all your attention.”

The hallway suddenly felt colder.

Daniel looked toward the wedding hall.

Through the open doors, he could see Vanessa standing there.

Perfect dress.

Perfect makeup.

Perfect smile.

Like nothing had happened.

But Daniel saw something else now.

Something he had ignored.

The impatience when Ellie interrupted their dates.

The frustration when he canceled plans because his daughter needed him.

The way Vanessa always said:

“You spoil her too much.”

Daniel had convinced himself those were normal relationship problems.

Now he wondered if they were warnings.

A wedding planner approached nervously.

“Daniel, everyone is waiting. The ceremony needs to start.”

Daniel didn’t answer.

His eyes remained on Vanessa.

Then he took Ellie’s hand.

And walked toward the woman who was supposed to become his wife.

But not to say “I do.”

To ask the question that would decide everything.
