CHAPTER 3 — Grandmother's Last Letter

Two days later, detectives returned with a warrant.
Tyler was arrested for attempted murder.
His mother screamed that the police were destroying their family.
His father demanded political favors.
Neither mattered.
The security footage had captured everything.
Not just the push.
The argument.
Tyler advancing.
Bridget trapped against the railing.
Both hands striking her shoulders.
There was no accident.
There was no misunderstanding.
Only intent.
News stations replayed the footage all afternoon.
The Whitmore family's reputation collapsed overnight.
But Bridget received an even greater surprise.
Grandmother Rose's attorney arrived at the hospital carrying a sealed envelope.
"I was instructed to deliver this only if your inheritance caused violence."
Bridget slowly opened it.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
My dearest Bridget,
If you're reading this, then I was right.
Money never reveals character.
It only removes the mask.
I didn't leave everything to you because I loved Tyler less.
I left it to you because you were the only one who never asked for it.
Tears rolled silently down Bridget's cheeks.
The attorney handed her another document.
"This wasn't included in the public reading."
Bridget looked down.
It was a controlling share agreement.
Grandmother had quietly transferred the voting rights of the jewelry company to an independent trust six months earlier.
Neither Harold nor Tyler could ever touch the business.
Grandmother had anticipated everything.
Even their greed.
That night, Lauren arrived at Bridget's hospital room alone.
"I brought something."
She placed Mason's tablet on the bed.
"There was another recording."
Bridget frowned.
"What recording?"
"Mason likes making videos."
Lauren pressed play.
The screen showed children running around the backyard.
Then Tyler's voice.
"If she won't sign it over..."
A pause.
"...I'll make sure she never walks away from this."
The video ended.
Lauren looked devastated.
"I didn't know."
Bridget reached for her hand.
"I know."
May you like
Lauren lowered her eyes.
"I'm divorcing him."
