Chapter 12 - THE WOMAN WHO STOPPED RUNNING

They hid inside an old fishing cabin owned by Marcus’s cousin.

Ava paced.

“I’m done.”

Victor looked up.

“Done with what?”

“Running.”

Daniel said, “Ava—”

“No.”

She pointed at him.

“You ran for twenty-seven years.”

Then at Victor.

“You hide behind private rooms and security.”

Then at Marcus.

“And you protect everyone by deciding what they’re allowed to know.”

Marcus took that hit silently.

Ava picked up Elena’s flash drive.

“My mother spent her life hiding.”

Her voice shook.

“I’m not doing it.”

Victor leaned forward.

“What are you proposing?”

“Go public.”

Daniel frowned.

“With what?”

“The truth.”

“Richard controls newspapers, politicians, police.”

“Not everybody.”

Marcus looked interested.

Ava continued.

“My friend Zoe works for an independent investigative network.”

Victor shook his head.

“Journalists get bought too.”

“Zoe doesn’t.”

“How do you know?”

“Because she once published an investigation against her own father’s company.”

Victor paused.

“Fair.”

They called Zoe.

She arrived three hours later.

Thirty-two.

Sharp eyes.

No patience.

When Ava finished explaining, Zoe stared at her.

“So your dead father is alive, your billionaire uncle may be your uncle, your great-uncle is allegedly a murderer, and a silver necklace unlocks half a billion dollars?”

Ava nodded.

Zoe exhaled.

“You really know how to ruin brunch plans.”

Despite everything, Ava laughed.

They opened Elena’s flash drive.

Hundreds of scanned documents.

Payments.

Bank transfers.

Photographs.

Names.

Then a video file.

Elena appeared on screen.

Ava stopped breathing.

Her mother looked young.

Scared.

Pregnant.

“If you’re watching this, something happened to me.”

Ava covered her mouth.

Elena continued.

“Richard Hale ordered the warehouse operation. William Hale approved it. Daniel helped until he tried to stop them.”

Victor sat down.

Elena named judges.

Police officers.

Businessmen.

Then she said something unexpected.

“Marcus Kane was not part of it.”

Marcus looked stunned.

“He tried to help us escape.”

Ava looked at him.

Marcus’s eyes filled.

Elena continued.

“If Ava ever sees this… sweetheart, I’m sorry.”

Ava started crying.

Not loudly.

Just tears she had held for fifteen years.

“You deserved a normal life.”

Daniel turned away.

“I hope I gave you at least pieces of one.”

The video ended.

Nobody spoke.

Then Zoe said quietly,

“This changes everything.”

Victor nodded.

“We release it.”

Zoe shook her head.

“Not yet.”

Ava stared.

“Why?”

“Because Richard will call it fake.”

She pointed at the documents.

“We need independent verification.”

Marcus’s phone rang.

He answered.

His face changed.

“What?”

He looked at Ava.

“Noah.”

Ava went cold.

“What about Noah?”

Marcus lowered the phone.

“The safe house was hit.”

Ava stopped breathing.

May you like

Marcus looked sick.

“They took him.”
