Chapter 2: The Envelope

No one spoke.
The salon felt frozen.
The receptionist stared at the gold seal as if she'd seen a ghost.
The stylist frowned.
"I'm sorry," he said gently. "Choose... the new owner?"
The old man nodded.
"My name is Walter Bennett."
A murmur swept across the room.
The receptionist frowned harder.
"Bennett?"
Walter slowly handed the envelope to the stylist.
"I'd rather you open it."
The stylist hesitated.
"I don't think I should."
"You should."
"It's addressed to whoever still remembers that kindness matters."
The stylist carefully broke the wax seal.
Inside were several legal documents.
The first page made his hands go numb.
BENNETT LUXURY SALONS
Founder and Sole Owner
Walter James Bennett
The stylist looked up in disbelief.
The receptionist laughed nervously.
"That's impossible."
"You expect us to believe this homeless man owns the company?"
Walter quietly pulled a faded photograph from the envelope.
It showed the grand opening of the salon thirty years earlier.
Standing in the center...
was a much younger Walter.
The same smile.
The same eyes.
Only the expensive suit had disappeared.
"So..." the stylist whispered.
"It's really you."
Walter nodded.
"Three years ago, I gave the company to a management board after my wife died."
"I wanted time to grieve."
"They promised to protect what we built."
His eyes slowly moved around the salon.
"I came back without telling anyone."
"I wanted to see whether people still treated strangers with dignity..."
"...or only customers with money."
The receptionist's face turned pale.
She suddenly realized what she had done.
And the worst part...
Walter hadn't even finished reading the report in his envelope.
It contained months of secret investigations into every employee.

Only one name had earned perfect marks.
The stylist's.
