Chapter 11 - AUDREY FIGHTS BACK

Audrey drove her heel down onto Julian's foot.

Hard.

He cursed.

She threw her head backward.

Her skull struck his nose.

Blood exploded across his shirt.

The knife moved away from her throat.

I crossed the room.

Julian shoved Audrey aside and swung at me.

I blocked his wrist.

We hit the floor together.

He was younger.

Stronger.

Angrier.

I had one advantage.

I wasn't fighting to punish him.

I was fighting to end it.

He punched me across the jaw.

Pain flashed through my head.

I trapped his wrist.

Twisted.

The knife fell.

Julian reached for it.

Audrey kicked it away.

Marcus entered as Julian tried to stand.

“Stay down.”

Julian laughed through the blood.

“You people think you're heroes?”

Nobody answered.

Police flooded the warehouse.

Julian was cuffed.

This time there was no bail.

Audrey stood against the wall shaking.

I went to her.

“You okay?”

She stared at me.

Then laughed.

It surprised both of us.

“What?”

“I hit him.”

“Yes.”

“With my head.”

“Yes.”

“That really hurt.”

I laughed.

Then she started crying.

I held her.

“You came again.”

“Every time.”

She nodded against my shoulder.

“Every time.”

That became our promise.

At the warehouse, police found more than kidnapping evidence.

Boxes of documents.

Cash.

Passports.

Hard drives.

And a sealed container with enough medication to kill someone several times over.

The prosecution's theory became clear.

Julian planned to drug Audrey.

Stage an overdose.

Use her fake psychiatric record to explain it.

Then collect twenty-five million dollars.

Arthur knew.

Miriam helped.

Caleb and Lydia were paid to assist.

Dr. Hall created the medical cover.

A family empire built over generations began collapsing in forty-eight hours.

But Audrey wasn't interested in revenge.

Not yet.

She wanted sleep.

Food.

A locked door she controlled herself.

She wanted to know who entered her room.

She wanted sunlight.

The simple things became victories.

A shower without someone timing her.

Choosing her own clothes.

Calling a friend.

Eating at midnight because she wanted toast.

Three weeks after the kidnapping attempt, she left the hospital.

She refused to return to my house.

At first, that hurt.

Then she explained.

“I need somewhere that belongs to me.”

I understood.

We found a small cottage outside town.

Two bedrooms.

Blue shutters.

A garden.

Audrey stood in the empty kitchen.

“This feels safe.”

“Then it's yours.”

She looked at me.

“Dad.”

“Yes?”

“I don't want you paying for everything.”

“Why?”

“Because Julian used money to control me.”

That stopped me.

She continued.

“I need to know I can take care of myself.”

So we compromised.

I helped with the security deposit.

She paid the rent.

The first night, we ate pizza on the floor.

Marcus joined us.

So did Daniel and Samuel.

Audrey looked around at eight gray-haired veterans sitting cross-legged with paper plates.

“You guys are ridiculous.”

Marcus raised his beer.

“We prefer legendary.”

For the first time in months, Audrey laughed without fear.

Then Rachel called.

Her voice was serious.

“We found something in Arthur's financial records.”

I stepped onto the porch.

“What?”

“The scheme didn't begin eight months ago.”

My stomach tightened.

“When did it begin?”

May you like

Rachel answered.

“Before Audrey married Julian.”
