Chapter 3 — The Favor They Wanted

Chapter 3 — The Favor They Wanted

After dinner, Richard Carter closed the office door.

Emma immediately felt like she was twenty-four again.

A child sitting in front of judgment.

"We need your help," her father said.

Emma laughed quietly.

"After ten years, that's why you called?"

Her mother looked offended.

"Don't be dramatic, Emma."

Then Olivia entered.

She placed a folder on the desk.

Inside were legal documents.

Emma frowned.

"What is this?"

Olivia smiled.

"A small business arrangement."

But Emma knew Olivia.

Nothing was ever small.

They wanted Emma to sign papers transferring ownership of the small company she had built over the years.

The company Emma created while raising Lily.

The company that saved them from poverty.

Her father leaned forward.

"Family helps family."

Emma looked at him.

"Funny. I don't remember family helping me when I was sleeping in my car with my newborn daughter."

The room went silent.

For the first time, Emma saw discomfort on their faces.

Because they remembered.

And they knew they were wrong.
