Chapter 13 - The Room They Couldn’t Control

The final board meeting took place twelve days after the gala.
Mara had expected chandeliers.
Instead, she found a conference room, weak coffee, and people who suddenly looked much smaller without evening clothes.
Tessa sat beside her.
June sat on the other side.
Damon was across the table, not at its head.
At counsel’s recommendation, he had agreed that an independent board member would chair the meeting.
His own failures belonged in the review too.
Elisa entered last.
She wore navy.
No diamonds.
Graham appeared by video with his attorney.
The chair explained the purpose.
They would consider the preliminary audit, staff conduct, and interim leadership.
The criminal investigation was separate.
Elisa folded her hands.
“Before we begin, I want to say how deeply I regret any misunderstanding involving the child.”
Mara leaned forward.
“My daughter has a name.”
Elisa looked at her.
“Nora,” Mara said.
“And this wasn’t a misunderstanding.”
Tessa touched her sleeve.
Not to silence her.
To remind her she wasn’t alone.
Celia presented the records.
Payments for meals that never arrived.
Private-event charges assigned to shelter programs.
Consulting fees unsupported by reliable documentation.
Threats to suspend funding after delivery shortages were reported.
She was careful with every claim.
That made the facts harder to dismiss.
Graham’s attorney challenged the conclusions.
Celia distinguished between what had been verified and what remained under investigation.
Then June read from her notebook.
Elisa interrupted.
“She was terminated for poor performance.”
June’s voice shook.
“You asked me to change receiving totals.”
“I asked you to correct errors.”
“You asked me to write six hundred when Ruth signed for forty-eight.”
Silence.
The chair asked Mara to describe the service office.
Mara kept her hands flat on the table.
“I asked to get my child.”
She stopped.
Swallowed.
“They kept telling me to sign.”
Elisa shifted.
“I never authorized anyone to keep you from your daughter.”
Damon turned on the loading-door footage.
Nobody spoke while it played.
When it ended, Elisa looked at him.
“You’re really willing to ruin everyone over this?”
He closed the laptop.
“No one in this room was ruined by giving a child cake.”
The vote removed Elisa from operational control and suspended Graham’s foundation authority.
The board authorized cooperation with investigators and a wider review.
Then Victor cleared his throat.
“There’s one more issue.”
He slid a bank notice across the table.

The four hundred eighty thousand dollars had been stopped.
But another transfer had gone out three days before the gala.
