Chapter 12 - THE OTHER CAMERA

George understood presentation.

He had spent decades making theft look like paperwork and cruelty look like concern.

Now he was making me look dangerous.

My employer called again.

This time, my boss asked one question.

“Is the video complete?”

“No.”

“Then send me proof when you have it.”

He didn’t promise to save my job.

He did give me room to breathe.

Adrian contacted the venue’s lawyer.

The recording needed to be preserved.

We would seek access through the proper process if they wouldn’t release it voluntarily.

I opened the wedding group chat.

Hundreds of messages.

Condolences.

Accusations.

People telling me I should have handled things privately.

I typed one sentence.

If anyone recorded the toast from the beginning, please send the original file.

Then I put my phone facedown.

Dad came over with coffee.

“You don’t have to prove you’re a good son to strangers.”

“I’m trying to stop them hurting you.”

“You already stood up.”

“That’s not the same as finishing.”

He smiled a little.

“No. It isn’t.”

A message arrived from a server named Daniel.

I didn’t know him.

He had been working near Dad’s table.

One guest had filmed the toast on a phone.

After we left, Daniel had asked her whether she intended to share it.

She had said she didn’t want trouble.

He sent me her number with permission.

I called.

Her name was Marissa Cole.

She sounded ashamed.

“I didn’t laugh,” she said.

“But I didn’t say anything.”

“You can do something now.”

She sent the file.

Beverly’s words were clear.

Fiona’s laugh was clear.

My father’s face was clear.

So was George’s smile.

I watched it once.

That was enough.

With Dad’s agreement, we released the complete clip and a short statement.

No insults.

No speculation.

Just the missing beginning.

By evening, the edited version had been challenged everywhere it appeared.

George’s polished story was cracking.

Then Adrian received the buyer’s due-diligence report.

Someone inside the company had quietly forwarded it.

He read one section and went still.

“What?”

“The sale isn’t just about HSS.”

He turned the screen.

A schedule listed several properties as company assets.

At the top was Dad’s home address.

According to George’s records, my father’s house belonged to him.
