Chapter 7 - The Man Who Almost Stayed Quiet —

Ben Alvarez arrived at Andrea’s office wearing a gray work jacket and carrying nothing.
That worried me.
People with proof always carried folders in movies.
Ben carried a paper cup he didn’t drink from.
Mom had brought me because I refused to stay behind. Noah was with Lisa.
Andrea looked at Ben.
“Before we start, Emily can wait outside.”
“I want her here,” Mom said. “If Emily wants to stay.”
I nodded.
Ben looked at me, then away.
“I should’ve come sooner.”
Mom folded her hands.
“Yes.”
He accepted that.
Dad’s truck, number 214, had been scheduled for repairs. Ben had taken it off the dispatch list twice.
Victor put it back.
“Daniel said he wouldn’t drive it until it was checked.”
“Then why did he?” Mom asked.
“They gave him a completed inspection sheet.”
Ben rubbed his thumb against the coffee cup.
“I didn’t know it was false until after.”
“Did you sign it?”
“No.”
“Who did?”
“I don’t know. The mechanic whose name is on it wasn’t working that day.”
Andrea wrote something down.
Ben continued.
“After the crash, Daniel’s complaint disappeared from the system. I still had a printed copy.”
“Where?”
“In a storage locker.”
“Why not bring it?”
His eyes flicked toward the window.
“Because yesterday a man followed my daughter home from school.”
Mom went still.
Ben’s voice broke.
“I have a kid too.”
For a moment, anger moved across Mom’s face so sharply I thought she might stand.
Then she said, “I know.”
Andrea helped him contact investigators. She arranged for him to provide the documents without making another private meeting.
When he left, his coffee was still untouched.
I watched him through the window.
“Is being scared a good reason not to help?” I asked.
Mom sat beside me.
“It’s a reason.”
“But not a good one?”
She looked at the door.
“Sometimes people need help being brave.”
That afternoon, the storage locker produced Dad’s written complaint, dispatch records, and a copy of an email.
The email came from Victor.
Keep 214 moving. We don’t lose another contract over Carter’s complaints.
Under that was a forwarded message.
Lorenzo Moretti’s name appeared at the top.
Mom read the line beneath it.

Then she slowly sat down.
Keep the fleet running. Handle the problems without bringing every complaint to me.
