Chapter 14 - THE FATHER’S LEDGER

Dad was awake when I entered his hospital room.
I placed the hard drive on his blanket.
We had found it exactly where Juliette said—behind Mom’s portrait in his study.
Lena stood beside the door.
“Tell me the truth,” I said.
Dad stared at the drive.
“I built Mercer Development with money from people I shouldn’t have trusted.”
“Shaw?”
“His father. Judges. Union officials. Politicians.”
“You laundered their money.”
“At first. Then I tried to stop.”
“Mom discovered it.”
He nodded.
“She created the ledger as protection. I begged her to destroy it.”
“But Juliette wanted control of it.”
“She believed the company belonged to her.”
“Did you kill Mom?”
“No.”
“Did you know Juliette poisoned her?”
His silence answered me.
Rage tightened my throat.
“You knew?”
“I suspected.”
“And you did nothing.”
“I was afraid.”
“Of losing the company?”
“Of losing both my daughters.”
“You lost us anyway.”
Dad began to cry.
He admitted that after the lake-house fire, Shaw told him Juliette would be charged unless he signed the transfer documents. Dad believed I was dead. He chose to protect the daughter he had left.
So he signed.
He helped turn Juliette’s lie into law.
“You didn’t light the match,” I said. “But you helped bury me.”
“Yes.”
Lena connected the hard drive to an isolated computer.
The master ledger contained decades of payments, recordings, photographs, and secret agreements.
It also contained the original footage from the lake house.
Juliette had filmed the confrontation as insurance against Shaw.
On-screen, I accused her of poisoning Mom. Juliette knocked me down. Shaw poured accelerant through the kitchen.
Then Dad appeared at the front door.
My heart stopped.
He had come to the house after all.
In the video, he saw me lying unconscious.
He saw Juliette holding the match.
And then Shaw pulled him outside.
Dad never tried to save me.
“I thought you were already dead,” he whispered.
“You didn’t check.”
“I was a coward.”
The truth hurt more than the fire.
Dad had not ordered my death.
He had simply valued his own safety more than my life.
Lena copied the files.
Arrest teams moved across three states. Police officials, executives, and two judges were taken into custody.
Captain Shaw’s network began collapsing before sunrise.
Juliette survived surgery and was placed under armed guard.
Nathan was charged with kidnapping, conspiracy, and attempted murder.
Dad asked what would happen to him.
Lena answered honestly.
“You’ll be charged too.”
He nodded.
For once, he did not ask for special treatment.
I turned to leave.
“Caroline,” he called.
I stopped but didn’t look back.
“I loved you.”
I closed my eyes.
“I know,” I said. “That was never the problem.”
My phone rang in the hallway.
The armed guard outside Juliette’s room had been found unconscious.
Her bed was empty.
On the pillow lay a note addressed to me.
